CORSAN's alarm over the non-inspection of articulated trucks by Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) highlights a pressing concern about road safety in Nigeria.

The lack of stringent measures to enforce regulations on articulated vehicles, particularly tankers, has led to numerous accidents and fatalities on Nigerian roads

*Key Issues:*

- *Unqualified Drivers*:

Many drivers operating articulated vehicles lack the necessary skills and qualifications, contributing to accidents.

- *Inadequate Vehicle Maintenance*:

Poorly maintained vehicles pose a significant risk to road safety.

- *Insufficient Regulation Enforcement*:

Lax enforcement of regulations by VIOs and other authorities emboldens non-compliant operators.

*Potential Consequences:*

- *Increased Accidents*:

Failure to enforce regulations can lead to more accidents, injuries, and fatalities.

- *Road Infrastructure Damage*:

Overloaded vehicles can cause significant damage to roads, leading to costly repairs.

*Possible Solutions:*

- *Stricter Enforcement*:

Implementing stringent measures to ensure compliance with regulations, such as regular inspections and penalties for non-compliance.

- *Driver Training*:

Providing training and certification programs for drivers operating articulated vehicles.

- *Public Awareness*: Educating the public about the importance of road safety and the risks associated with non-compliant vehicles.

The House of Representatives has taken steps to address some of these issues, tasking the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and VIOs to apply stringent measures against unlicensed tanker and trailer drivers. By working together, authorities can improve road safety and reduce the risk of accidents involving articulated vehicles ยน.
