Adams Oshiomhole: Populist Political Philosophy and Enduring Relevance in Nigerian Politics
By
Felix Iyalomhe PhD.

May 29, 2026
Few figures in contemporary Nigerian politics illustrate the connection between grassroots engagement and national relevance as clearly as Adams Oshiomhole. His political philosophy has long been shaped by a populist, labour-oriented worldview rooted in advocacy for ordinary workers and citizens, a legacy that continues to influence his role in public life.
Oshiomhole first gained national prominence not through elective office, but through labour activism. As a former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), he positioned himself as a vocal defender of wage justice, workers’ rights, and fair economic policies. This period defined much of his political identity: direct engagement with trade unions, public negotiations with government, and an emphasis on the lived realities of low- and middle-income Nigerians. That foundation helped shape a political style that often prioritises accessibility and public persuasion over elite distance.
When he transitioned into partisan politics, particularly as Governor of Edo State, Oshiomhole carried this approach into governance. His leadership style was frequently characterised by town-hall-style engagements, public accountability sessions, and a rhetorical emphasis on infrastructure delivery and social services as tangible measures of governance. Supporters often point to his ability to communicate policy in plain language and frame governance issues in ways that resonate with everyday economic concerns.
Critics, however, have noted that his confrontational style and strong rhetorical positioning sometimes intensified political tensions, particularly in party politics and electoral contests. Nevertheless, even these critiques underscore his continued relevance: Oshiomhole remains a figure who actively shapes political discourse rather than observing it from the sidelines.
In broader Nigerian politics, his trajectory reflects a recurring theme, the translation of labour activism into electoral influence. His political survival and continued relevance are closely tied to his ability to maintain a connection, at least rhetorically and symbolically, with ordinary citizens who view him as a representative of resistance against elite detachment.
In summary, Oshiomhole’s political philosophy blends populist labour roots with pragmatic electoral politics. Whether in government, party leadership, or national debate, his influence persists largely because he has consistently framed politics as a contest over social justice, economic fairness, and accountability, issues that remain central to public life in Nigeria.

Beneath the Eid Sky: Ogieneni Bows in Gratitude as Uzairue Embraces the Soul of Eid
By
Abdullateef Muhammad
May 29, 2026.
There are moments in the life of a community that quietly transcend celebration and become memories etched in the hearts of the people. The recent Eid celebration in Uzairue was one of such moments, not merely because prayers were offered or festivities held, but because gratitude, humanity and royalty met in rare harmony.
As early morning calm embraced the ancient land of Uzairue, worshippers gathered in solemn devotion to mark Eid, their hearts filled with hope, reflection and thanksgiving. Yet, beyond the prayers and exchanges of goodwill, one presence stirred deep emotions among the people, that of the Ogieneni of Uzairue, His Royal Highness, Alhaji Kadiri Imonikhe Omogbai.
With humility written across his countenance, the revered traditional ruler joined fellow Muslims in observing the Eid prayers, radiating both strength and serenity. For many residents, seeing their royal father stand among them in gratitude to Almighty Allah, was more than ceremonial, it was reassuring, symbolic and deeply emotional.
In an exclusive encounter with Subtle MEDIA Network shortly after the Eid prayers, the monarch expressed gratitude to Almighty Allah for the privilege of witnessing another Eid celebration and appreciated the people of Uzairue for their prayers, support and goodwill towards him.
Speaking with deep emotion and sincerity, the Ogieneni disclosed that his health continues to improve daily, attributing his strength and recovery solely to the mercy and kindness of Allah.
His remarks carried not the pride of royalty, but the sincerity of a grateful servant of God, a leader who understands the value of community prayers and the healing power of collective love.
For many present, it was difficult not to reflect on the fragile nature of life and the enduring strength found in faith. The monarch’s appearance and heartfelt message became a living testimony of hope, resilience and divine mercy.
Beyond gratitude, the Ogieneni used the sacred occasion to remind Muslims and the wider society of their responsibilities to humanity. He urged the faithful to continually remember the poor, the vulnerable and the less privileged, stressing that compassion and generosity remain among the true essences of Eid.
His appeal resonated deeply at a time when many families continue to battle economic hardship and uncertainty. In a society often burdened by division and struggle, the monarch’s message served as a moral reminder that kindness remains one of the greatest acts of worship.
The Eid gathering in Uzairue may have ended like every other public event, but the emotions it inspired will linger for a long time. It was not merely a celebration of sacrifice, it became a celebration of gratitude, recovery, leadership and humanity.
And perhaps, that was the true beauty of the day, seeing a royal father standing before his people, not only as a monarch, but as a grateful believer, reminding everyone that beyond power, wealth and status, mercy from Allah remains the greatest gift of all.
“When a tree survives the storm, its shade becomes more precious to the people beneath it.”

As Core Hajj Rites Near, NAHCON Cautions Pilgrims Against Loitering, Eating, Resting or Sleeping on Public Pathways
By
Abdullateef Muhammad
May 24, 2026.
The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria has issued an urgent advisory to Nigerian pilgrims and State Pilgrims’ Welfare Boards, warning against the practice of loitering, eating, resting, or sleeping on streets, walkways, and other unauthorized public spaces in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as the core Hajj rites draw nearer.
According to the Commission, Saudi authorities have expressed concerns that such actions pose serious health, safety and environmental risks, while also obstructing pedestrian movement, emergency access routes and public facilities. The advisory further noted that exposure to harsh weather conditions, particularly extreme heat, could expose pilgrims to avoidable health complications and other safety hazards.
NAHCON therefore strongly advised all Nigerian pilgrims to immediately desist from occupying roadsides, open pathways and other public areas not designated for relaxation or other activities. Pilgrims were urged to remain within their approved accommodations and make use of only authorized locations provided for rest and related purposes.
The Commission also directed State Pilgrims’ Welfare Boards, officials and welfare teams to intensify sensitization campaigns and closely monitor pilgrims under their supervision to ensure strict compliance with the directive.
NAHCON emphasized that adherence to safety regulations and operational guidelines remains essential to safeguarding the wellbeing of pilgrims and ensuring the smooth, orderly and successful conduct of the Hajj exercise.
