In Mangu Local Government Area, Plateau State, specifically Wulbi & Kantoma, restrictions have been imposed on seasonal migrating pastoralists for four consecutive days. Local Mwagavul traditional leaders and security personnel have enforced these restrictions. The security situation along the Mangu gazetted international stock route remains precarious for herders, particularly in Sabon gari, Wulbi, and Kantoma areas. We are highly concerned about the security threats herders face in these regions. The incident of cows being stopped by security forces, leading to overcrowding and strain on grazing areas, has been captured on video. The cattle are expected to remain in the area from the 11th to 13th of June 2026.

🚨 ALERT: Rising Cattle Poisoning in Plateau State
There is a serious and increasing trend of cattle poisoning in parts of Plateau State, particularly in Bassa Local Government Area, where such incidents are being reported repeatedly.
On Tuesday, March 17, 2026, three herders lost nine (9) cattle after grazing on land that had been deliberately poisoned in the Jebbu-Bassa area. This occurred less than 72 hours after a similar incident, where three (3) cattle were killed in Ansha within the same local government area.
The total number of cattle lost from January to March has reached fifty-four (54). Out of these, compensation has been paid for only one, while the remaining 53 have received no compensation.
We therefore strongly call on authorities and all relevant stakeholders to take immediate action to address this issue. Whenever crop damage occurs, herders are compelled to pay compensation, but when their cattle are harmed, they are often neglected and not compensated accordingly.
