Today is World Mental Health Day.
This year’s theme: Access to Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies.
In Nigeria, in Africa, we know about emergencies. We navigate them daily. The floods that displace families. The economic pressure that never eases. The constant news cycle that never stops. The traffic that steals hours from our lives. The expectations that never lighten.
But here’s what we don’t talk about enough: the mental emergency happening while we’re just trying to survive.
The anxiety that doesn’t leave when the flood waters recede.
The trauma that replays long after the crisis “ends.”
The exhaustion of just getting through another day.
The weight of feeling alone in a city of millions.
These wounds are invisible, but they’re real. And they deserve care, attention, and resources just as much as any physical emergency.
You’re not weak for struggling. You’re not dramatic for feeling overwhelmed. You’re human, navigating circumstances that would test anyone’s mental strength.
With only 1 psychiatrist for every 1 million people in Nigeria, the treatment gap is real. But so is hope. So is support. So is the power of simply knowing you’re not alone.
Today, we pause. We acknowledge. We validate.
Your mental health matters. Your invisible wounds are real. And you deserve support—not someday, but right now.
Swipe through for a moment of recognition. Then visit the link in our bio for mental health resources, coping strategies, and information created with you—the Nigerian experience—in mind.
We see you. You’re not alone in this. 💙💚

Sometimes the stories we tell ourselves become the walls we live behind 🧱
Growing up, we collect so many ideas about who we’re supposed to be - from family, society, social media. But, think about it… who actually are YOU?
Unlearning isn’t easy, but it’s necessary. And you don’t have to do it alone.
Drop a 💛 if you’re ready to rewrite your story.
