On April 22, 1970, over 20 million people across the U.S. took to the streets to demand environmental protection. That day became the first Earth Day, a movement born from oil spills, air pollution, and a rising awareness that the planet needed help.

Earth Day sparked the creation of critical policies like the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Endangered Species Act. It united people across politics, class, and geography with one purpose: to protect our only home.

Today, Earth Day is a global movement, with over 1 billion people in 190+ countries participating each year. But why does it still matter?

Because climate change is accelerating.

Recently, I noticed my boys at Recyclearn often argues about e-waste among the recyclables we recover. I wondered why, until the weekend, when I saw Khaleed proudly showing off a light he had repurposed from e-waste. His room is now beautifully decorated with different versions of these lights.

No need for NEPA, I joked.

This moment reminded me that innovation isn’t always about grand inventions it’s often just a small tweak, a fresh perspective, or a simple turn in the right direction.
