Lord, You are the greatest. You are pure. You are truth. You created all truth. You are greater than my conception I have of You. I can't comprehend Your greatness. Yet, I know that You are amazing and awe worthy. I know You are better than everything else in my life combined together. I worship You. Lord, I put none above You. I praise You and come before You in the name of Jesus. Amen
Daniel is confessing to God both his sin and the sin of the people of Israel. He begs God to restore Jerusalem to turn away his wrath. The Jewish people are suffering a severe persecution and Daniel is asking for relief. In a series of visions, Daniel is told that there will be relief in time. Sometimes we feel that we are suffering God's wrath. Usually, this is when we have not been faithful, and bad things seem to come our way. In some cases, this can be through fault of our own. If we have not been doing our work as well as we could, or were wasting money on drugs, alcohol, or gambling, or striking out in anger against the people at work or at home, then perhaps it is our fault. On the other hand, sometimes we are suffering at the sinful hands of others. For those who suffer from other people's prejudices or systemic discrimination, then it isn't their fault. When sin is present, bad things can happen. The solution is turning our hearts back to God and both praying for forgiveness and working to change. Whether the change needed is in ourselves or the community, we need to part of the solution. Jesus told us to love our enemies, but one of the greatest signs of love is to pray for them. If we really want to change both ourselves and our community, we need to pray. We need to pray for ourselves, that God will give us the graces we need to change our behavior. We need to pray for our community so that people will recognize the need to work for justice, not just for ourselves, but also for the most vulnerable among us – the poor, the disenfranchised, immigrants, those addicted to alcohol or drugs. Although I've said it before, it's worth repeating – If we want peace, we need to work – and pray – for justice.
