✨ AURORA AUSTRALIS POSSIBLE TONIGHT!
Issued by GaiaSX and WeAreZA | 23:45PM 19 Jan 2026
Aurora Australis watchers in South Africa should remain alert as the current G4 severe geomagnetic storm, with Kp levels at 8 and solar wind speeds exceeding 1600 km/s, has compressed Earth’s magnetic shield to the point where auroral activity could extend further than usual. While auroras are rare at South African latitudes, the intensity of this storm, combined with the possibility of G5 escalation, means faint auroral glows may be visible on the southern horizon under clear skies. Radiation storm effects are peaking, with HF radio blackouts, GPS errors, and potential grid fluctuations expected. This is a significant event: South Africans should watch the skies tonight for any chance of witnessing the Aurora Australis, a spectacle seldom seen from these latitudes.
For South Africans hoping to glimpse the Aurora Australis during this severe geomagnetic storm, head to a dark location with a clear southern horizon and allow your eyes to adjust for at least 20 minutes. Use a smartphone in night mode with exposure set to 10–15 seconds, ISO around 800–1600 and keep the phone steady on a tripod. For DSLR or mirrorless cameras, set manual mode with aperture f/2.8–f/4, ISO 800–3200, and exposure between 10–20 seconds; disable flash and use manual focus set to infinity. Longer exposures will reveal faint colors invisible to the naked eye, so patience and stability are key to capturing this rare spectacle from South Africa.
