Furnmart and HiFi Corp Workers Stage Nationwide Strike Over Salary Dispute

By staff reporter

RUNDU, Namibia – Employees of Furnmart and HiFi Corp have embarked on a nationwide strike, demanding an 8% salary increase instead of the 5% increase reportedly offered by management.

In Rundu, workers at Furnmart downed tools and gathered outside their workplace, where they were seen singing, dancing, and chanting various songs, including EEF anniversary songs, as part of their demonstration.

According to sources on the ground, employees argue that their current salaries do not reflect the value they bring to the company. It is alleged that individual employees generate sales of approximately N$130,000, yet many feel they are being compensated inadequately.

Workers say their primary demand is a salary adjustment that will allow them to meet the rising cost of living and provide for their families with dignity. Protesters maintain that the 8% increase they are seeking is reasonable given their contribution to the company's revenue.

The strike remains ongoing as employees await feedback from senior management. No official statement had been issued by Furnmart or HiFi Corp yet.

The outcome of the wage negotiations is expected to have a significant impact on operations across the companies' branches nationwide as both parties seek a resolution to the dispute.

Teen Gang-Rape Arrests Renew Fears Over Crime in Okahandja

By staff reporter

A new report by journalist Emil Seibeb of the Namibia Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) states that Namibian Police have arrested all nine suspects, aged between 15 and 16, accused of gang-raping a 25-year-old woman in Okahandja over the weekend.

According to the report, the alleged attack took place in the early hours of Sunday morning while the woman was walking home.

The arrests have renewed concerns about rising violent crime in Okahandja, with some residents questioning whether teenage gangs are becoming increasingly ruthless and dangerous. The incident has also revived memories of last year's murder of a school pupil whose body was found dumped under a bridge.

As fear grows within the community, questions are being raised about whether recent violent crimes are isolated incidents or signs of a broader problem involving organised groups of young offenders. Residents are increasingly asking whether enough is being done to tackle youth crime and restore public safety in the town.

Police have not indicated any link between the recent r**e case and previous violent crimes, and investigations remain ongoing.

RAMAPHOSA CRITICISED FOR LUKEWARM STANCE ON ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION

By staff reporter

President Cyril Ramaphosa's address on illegal immigration is being criticised as a lukewarm response to one of South Africa's most contentious issues. While calling for unity, compassion and respect for the law, he stopped short of announcing strong action against illegal immigration or firmly addressing the growing tensions surrounding the issue. Critics say the speech left many South Africans without clear answers on how the government intends to tackle illegal immigration.
