It’s “the aunties” for me.

You see, I never had to teach my children
about friendship.
Because they always saw it through the ones they call “the aunties.”

The ones I never had to introduce to my kids as my best friends.

The ones who were there to cradle my babies when my hands were full or my heart was heavy.

The ones who have been there since we were children ourselves.

I never had to pull out old photo albums or remind them of names, timelines, or history.

I never had to explain to my children how I could count on them to show up in my moments of grief as easily as in my moments of celebration.

I never had to justify our bonds in spite of our differences.

I never had to prove why these humans mattered to me.

I never had to… because from the moment my children were born, they saw what friendship looked like through “the aunties.”

And they knew that these women’s love for me spilled over naturally into love for them,
into love for us, without a beat.

So if you ask me how I teach my children about real, true, authentic friends,
it’s “the aunties” for me ♥️
