Portrait of a Brookesia minima (and the guides thumb). This might be the most adorable reptile, nay animal, ever.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I have no idea how the forest guides on Nosy Komba found this little chameleon. At ~1cm long and the colour and texture of a leaf I literally could have spent the rest of my life searching for it. I'm not gonna lie, I squealed like a lunatic when I saw one for the first time.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Brookesia minima is one of the species of Madagascan dwarf chameleons, they are endangered, and only found in a teeny tiny part of NW Madagascar.

Happy day all!

Turtleeeeeee! Each marine turtle can be individually identified by the scute patten on the side of their face. It's like a fingerprint. (Except the leatherbacks, who don't have face scutes).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This beaut of a green turtle was happily grazing on some seagrass (their favourite chow) in the shallow waters off in the north west corner of Madagascar.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Sakatia Lodge] have a great citizen science project running to photograph the turtles that frequent the seagrass habitats right outside the lodge and build an ID database of Mada turtles. This way researchers can learn more about their population, their movements and their habits.

Young female leopard looking super miffed the local hyena pack just stole her impala kill. She sat alert and grumpy under a bush nearby and listened as they all fought over the kill amongst themselves.

Leopards are listed as a 'Vulnerable' to extinction on the IUCN Redlist.

This little dude kept ignoring his mum's gentle growls to stay safely out of site in the thicket. Less that a couple of minutes after being dropped there on his own, he ran straight out again to join his older siblings in the open for playtime. He did not appreciate being left behind alone. Mum duly picked him up again (with an almost visible eye roll) to return him to the thorny bushes. Look at that dejected but adorable face!

This beautiful girl was happily napping in a tree by the riverbed after a delicious meal of impala. A couple of hyenas smelled lunch and came to check out if there was a free buffet available. She kept a close eye on them while they sniffed around the base of the tree. Then promptly went back into a food coma.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I can't remember this beauty's name though ?

Thar be dragons!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Adorable tiny dragons. Spearpoint leaf-tailed geckos (Uoplatus ebenaui) are the smallest species in their group only growing up to 4inches. If you can find them (notoriously hard, thanks ) they will most likely be in the forest only in Nosy Be and the most North-Eastern part of Madagascar.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
They also change colour between the day and night to blend in better with their surroundings - see the difference in the photos - I did not mess with the colours, first half daytime, second half nighttime.

Happy world frog day! I shall jump on the bandwagon...
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The interweb tells me there are 311 identified species of frogs in Madagascar. This includes a small group called the Mantella more commonly known as golden frogs or Malagasy poison frogs.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This little dude is a bronze/brown mantella. There is a 20c Euro coin in the second frame for scale (that's 2.2cm!)

Latte sea puppy coming in for a full on nose boop!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Australian sea lions only live in Western and Southern Australia. They are the RAREST sea lion species in the world with only 10-12,000 individuals estimated.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
They have a pretty broad diet including crustaceans, cephalopods, fish and even birds!? They can dive up to 300m apparently, but from my experience like to nap and sunbathe (haul out) a LOT.
