We're a social enterprise using digital technology to help create a circular economy for plastic waste.

We're a social enterprise based in the UK but working with global partners to tackle plastic waste. We've built the free Wastebase app to help people and community groups collect data about the plastic waste they find in their environment. You can use the app to:
- scan waste you find in your area
- gather evidence about the brands and companies responsible for waste
- organise a clean and get ins

♻️ Recycling Reality Check 🚨
What really happens before recycling can even begin?

In many cities across the Global South, waste collection is done manually — by waste pickers, small teams, and trucks with no compactors. That means lower volumes, harder work, and slower processing… even as plastic waste keeps rising.

Meanwhile, recycling trucks in high-income countries can carry up to 12 tonnes.
In Maputo? Often 600–700 kg per trip.
That’s the real gap. 🌍⚠️

Yet waste pickers keep the system moving — collecting, sorting, and keeping plastic out of the environment every day. 💚

It’s time to support stronger collection systems, fair pay, and true producer responsibility — because recycling shouldn’t fall on communities alone.

As Plastic Free July comes towards an end, the habits and changes we’ve all made should remain forever. 🙏

Whether it’s using reusable bags at the supermarket, buying less products that come in plastic bottles or making an effort to pick up litter when you’re out on a walk, it’s crucial that we keep taking action to make a long lasting difference to the planet. 🌍

Let us know in the comments something you’ve changed during Plastic Free July but will continue to do! 🧡

AMAZING WORK, THANK YOU! 🙏

As of today, we’re pleased to announce that we surpassed 466,000 items of plastic waste scanned, using our WASTEBASE app which is incredible. This over 5,000 more items processed since we last posted at the end of May 2025.

All your scans allow us to build important sets of data that put pressure on plastic producers.

We’re doing all we can do get in front of businesses and organisations to help the planet by encouraging producers to act more sustainably. 🌍

Here’s to the next 466,000 scans and beyond! 🙌

With the summer holidays on the horizon, it’s the perfect time to get outdoors and enjoy some quality time together as a family! ☀️🌷

When you’re out and about, why not challenge yourselves to picking up at least 5 bits of plastic waste and disposing of them responsibly? 🙌

Imagine the impact we could make in a single summer if everyone did this every time they ventured out? 🧡

Just a thought, but if you do, please feel free to tag .io in any of your findings! Also have a look at the link below all about taking part in Plastic Free July. 🙏

Here’s another information segment on our plastic compactor prototype! 🧡

We’ve designed this resource with a few things in mind, take a look below.

👉 No bigger than what one person can operate

👉 There’s a focus specifically on fitting PET within it

👉 We use locally available materials in Mozambique

👉 Being locally repairable is important so we avoid complex mechanisms

👉 It’s foldable so it can be carried on a truck

👉 Big enough to fit typical waste bags (mosquito nets) in a single compaction

Ultimately, we want something that is simple and effective to allow us to pack more plastic into a single collection. Development is still underway but we’re finding our prototypes more and more efficient each time, so watch this space for more coming soon! ♻️✅
