We’re transforming the Masana office into a sewing room! 7 former street boys have completed a skills training course in sewing and will begin the practicum part of their training. Join us in praying that this new skill will lead to income for these teens and their families!

Today was Dia dos Trabalhadores in Mozambique…. literally translated to Day of the Worker. Labor Day. It’s a day for workers in any and every sector to be recognized for their hard work. Masana celebrated our staff with a lunch for them and their families! We are grateful for the team God has given us to be a part of reaching street boys and rebuilding families!!

Three years ago, we encountered a young boy living on the streets of Maputo with his mother, who was struggling with mental health issues. The best solution we found for him was to stay at a Christian children’s center while his mom tried to get her health issues under control. This week, our team got to be a part of seeing this young boy reunited with his now healthy mom!!! We praise God for the transformation in her life and continue to pray that God will now restore their family!!

The boys at the Masana transitional home have begun planting seeds in the garden. Soon they will reap a harvest and have fresh vegetables to share with their families.

Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly and whoever sows generously will also read generously. 2 Corinthians 9:6

It’s the start of the new school year in Mozambique! Each year, Masana supports about 200 children (former street boys and their siblings) with school fees, uniforms and a back pack full of school supplies.

Join us in praying for these children as they go back to school! May the knowledge they acquire this year help lead them into the future God has planned for them.

For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will fill you with joy. Proverbs 2:10

Our Story

An ever-growing population of boys consider the streets of Maputo, Mozambique their home. Poverty, problematic family situations, and an inability amongst families to support their loved ones have caused many boys to seek refuge in the inner city. Those seeking new lives of opportunity are instead forced to face the realities of life on the street and the daunting task of returning home.

Mozambique is a nation rich in tradition and community. Families are extensive and well-adept at caring for those closest to them. These families and these communities are the key to ending street-living amongst Maputo’s youth. It is by engaging the pre-existing family structure already in place in Mozambique that Masana fights this epidemic of street boys. Simply put: returning them home.

Our base of operations is a day-center where we first get to know the boys (ages 18 and under) that make their way through our doors. We provide things like nutritional meals, education, access to first aid, healthcare and hygiene, and a safe place for the kids to be kids. Through these daily activities at the center, our staff members work to build deeper relationships with the boys to better understand their needs and the individual circumstances that brought them to us.

Once a boy expresses his desire to return home, our reintegration team works with the families and the boys to provide counseling, create an education plan, and assess and meet other needs as they arise. Full reintegration can often take years, but we are committed to investing in our boys for the entirety of their journey home. Since 2009, Masana has succeeded in reintegrating over 140 boys into local homes. We believe each one has the potential to change his direction in life and become a man of character, contributing to society.
