Understanding the ‘why’ of snoring will become easier if we first understand what really causes the rumbling, reverberating sound of snoring.
Snoring, simply put, is literally vibration of structures (flesh/muscles) in the throat.
When one falls asleep, muscles around the body slowly start losing tone. Just like how the hands and the legs feel limp, the muscles in the throat feel limp too (so to say).
This loss of tone or limpness causes the soft structures in the mouth, like tongue, uvula, soft palate, to fall back into the throat and partially obstruct the passageway of air into the lungs.
What happens when air passes through partially obstructed airway? It sets these soft structures into vibration. When structures vibrate and flutter they give rise to the echoing sound we so dearly loathe a.k.a snore.
I put particular emphasis on the word ‘partial’ because if the obstruction becomes ‘complete,’ the air will no longer pass from the nose to the lungs and therefore, would not set various structures into vibration.
With complete obstruction, there wouldn’t be snoring but silence because there wouldn’t be airflow at all, to begin with. Complete obstruction is therefore called apnea — complete cessation of breathing — also known as Obstructive Sleep Apnea or OSA (because it happens during sleep).
Having understood what the ‘snore’ really is, let’s see what conditions could contribute to the partial obstruction of the airway:
Obesity — People with large amounts of fat around neck/throat are more likely to snore.
Anatomical contributors — A large tongue, an oddly shaped uvula, a mispositioned or deformed jaw are a few possibilities.
Relaxants — either medicines that relax muscles or consumption of alcohol before sleep.
Postural — Sleeping on one’s back is more likely to aid in structures obstructing the airway than sleeping on sides/belly (gravity, you see).

Snoring - What Happens
Snoring occurs when the flow of air from the mouth or nose to your lungs makes the tissues of the airway vibrate. This usually is caused by a blockage (obstruction) or narrowing in the nose, mouth, or throat (airway).
When you inhale during sleep, air enters the mouth or nose and passes across the soft palate camera.gif (the back of the roof of the mouth) on its way to the lungs. The back of the mouth-where the tongue and upper throat meet the soft palate and uvula-is collapsible. If this area collapses, the airway becomes narrow or blocked. The narrowed or blocked passage disturbs the airflow, which causes the soft palate and uvula to vibrate and knock against the back of the throat, causing snoring. The tonsils and adenoids camera.gif may also vibrate. The narrower the airway is, the more the tissue vibrates, and the louder the snoring is.
