How can you tell when your bird needs a nail trim? And why is it so important to keep the nails at a good length?

---------
Nail length can affect your bird's grip and change where stress is placed on their joints. If the nails are too long, over time, this stress placed on their joints can cause irritation and early arthritis, especially in older birds.

---------
The best method to determine your bird's nail length is super simple! Just place your bird on a flat surface (like your countertop) and look at their toes. If the nail is long enough that it causes the toe to lift off the surface or twist, the nail is too long.

--------
The frequency your bird needs its nails trimmed depends entirely on your bird and your setup!

Make sure you have plenty of natural perches (not dowels), and a concrete perch can be recommended as well (use should be monitored to ensure it doesn't rub your bird's palm and cause bumblefoot).

Some birds are just "perch potatoes" and may need regular trims regardless of your setup. In general, we recommend making a habit of checking your bird's nail length every 4-6 weeks.

(As a side note: If you notice that your bird's nails/beak are growing excessively long super fast, this can be a sign of fatty liver disease and should be evaluated by an avian veterinarian.)

---------
Of course, if you aren't sure if your bird needs a nail trim, feel free to send us a picture of your bird's feet on a flat surface, and we're more than happy to offer our thoughts!
