Keeping young people safe online is a priority we all share โ and it takes all of us working together. ๐ค
We brought together Malaysian media, creators, civil society organizations, government representatives, youth and parent voices in Kuala Lumpur for our Screen Smart program, where we shared the latest updates to Instagram Teen Accounts โ now with built-in protections inspired by 13+ content ratings, turned on by default for teens in Malaysia.
Here's what's new:
๐ Age-appropriate by default โ Teens will now see content similar to what they'd see in an age-appropriate movie, without needing to change a single setting.
๐จโ๐ฉโ๐ง Limited Content for parents โ A new, stricter option that gives families even more control, including filtered content, blocked search terms, and restricted comments.
๐ก๏ธ Expanded protections โ Teens won't be able to follow or interact with accounts sharing inappropriate content, and restricted content is blocked across Explore, Feed, Stories, comments and DMs.
These updates build on our ongoing commitment to Malaysia โ from training over 5,500 MSMEs in digital skills, to reaching over 13 million Malaysians through our safety and anti-scams programs with partners like Ratio:Cause, CelcomDigi, Ton Ton and the Content Forum.
Because building a safer internet for young Malaysians isn't something any one organization can do alone. It takes families, educators, government, and industry โ together. ๐ฒ๐พ

Last week, we brought together parents, educators, youth leaders, and policymakers in Kuala Lumpur for our Screen Smart Malaysia event โ an important conversation about how we can work together to create safer online experiences for young people.
What We Shared About Teen Accounts
Now available in Malaysia across Instagram, Facebook & Messenger:
โ
Private by default โ only approved followers can see content
โ
Messaging restrictions โ only people teens follow can DM them
โ
Time management โ daily reminders & Sleep Mode (10PM-7AM)
โ
Parental Supervision โ set limits, see connections, get notifications
โ
Teens under 16 need parental permission to change these settings
We also hosted an interactive session using conversation cards designed to help families talk openly about life online with Aishah Jennifer Sinclair.

Easy Tips to Help Your Teen Stay Safe Online
TIP 4: Keep the conversation going.
The safety talk you have at 13 won't cover what they need at 16.
Their world evolvesโand your conversations should too.
If you want support, the Family Center Education Hub at familycenter.meta.com offers resources from experts to help you navigate these conversations.
SHARE THIS POST with a parent who might find it helpful.
Sometimes we all need a reminder that we're not in this alone.
Fill in the blank:
"The hardest part about talking to my teen about online safety is __________."
We'll be sharing tips based on your answers in our final post this week!
Easy Tips to Help Your Teen Stay Safe Online
TIP 3: Safety features are already built in.
When your teen uses Instagram, Facebook, or Messenger, they're automatically placed into Teen Accounts with protections on by default:
โ Strangers can't message them
โ Only friends can tag them
โ Age-inappropriate content is automatically filtered
โ Suspicious images in DMs are blurred
For teens under 16, a supervising parent's permission is needed to change any of these settings.
DID YOU KNOW about this?
React:
๐ = Yes, I knew!
๐ฎ = This is news to me
โค๏ธ = This makes me feel better
Let's play: THIS OR THAT โ Parent Edition
When it comes to your teen's screen time, are you more likely to:
A) Set strict time limits
B) Let them manage it themselves with gentle reminders
Comment A or B belowโand tell us why!
No judgement here. Every family is different.
Easy Tips to Help Your Teen Stay Safe Online
TIP 2: Make it a conversation, not a crackdown.
Building trust matters just as much as any safety feature.
Here are 3 questions to try with your teen:
1๏ธโฃ What's your favourite thing about being online?
2๏ธโฃ What would you do if someone you don't know messaged you?
3๏ธโฃ What's a reasonable time to put the phone away?
Setting expectations together makes a bigger difference than setting rules alone.
CHALLENGE: Try asking your teen one of these questions this week. Come back and tell us how it went!
Easy Tips to Help Your Teen Stay Safe Online
TIP 1: Stay curious about their world.
Teens use social media to explore hobbies, learn new things, and connect with communities that matter to them.
You might not recognise the creators they follow or the jokes they shareโand that's okay.
Try this: Ask your teen to show you what excites them online.
It's a simple way to open conversations without it feeling like an interrogation.
YOUR TURN: Have you ever asked your teen to show you something they love online? What did you discover? Tell us in the comments.
Quick question for parents:
How often do you talk to your teen about what they do online?
๐ต Every day
๐ข A few times a week
๐ก Once in a while
๐ด Honestly? Not often enough
Vote in the poll and let us know what makes these conversations easyโor hard!
Safer Internet Day is a good time to remember: keeping your teen safe online doesn't require reading every message or battling over screen time.
Between group chats, online trends, and unfamiliar apps, their world moves fastโbut staying involved doesn't have to be stressful.
Over the next few days, we're sharing easy tips to help you find that balance.
But first, we want to hear from you:
