Proboscis Monkeys!
We really wanted to see some during our time on the Kinabatangan River and we saw lots.

After reading reviews and information about the 'sanctuary' we decided it was not a place we wanted to visit.

Cruising along the river and spotting these fascinating primates high in the trees was a wonderful experience.

These images were taken on a 55-210mm lens and some have been cropped closer. Last image gives an idea of how far away we were.

Kinabatangan River blog post is on the website.

Spotting hornbills was a wonderful part of our time on the Kinabatangan River. They were most often in the tops of the tallest trees.
All the details of our Kinabatangan River stay are on the blog.

Kinabatangan River review is over on the blog. We booked a 2 day 1 night package that included 3 river cruises.
โžก๏ธ Swipe for wild orangutan sighting. Terrible photo - my lens kept fogging, I can't keep the camera stable especially in a boat and mostly I just wanted to take in the moment and watch this guy go about his morning in the trees. More photos to come, all details of our experience on the blog.

You probably know Australia's Twelve Apostles but this isn't it. This is a quiet little beach further along the Great Ocean Road. This is one of three coves/bays in the area with beach access. The coastal landscapes are stunning and we had this whole beach to ourselves.

I kind of wanted to gate keep but it's such a beautiful spot and who knows how long it will be here so if you're in the area, go check it out.
You will find it on Google Maps listed as...

Trekking through lowland tropical forest in Sabah, Borneo had me questioning my fitness level. But we reached Langanan Waterfall and felt our efforts were worth it. The hike was tough because humidity was incredibly high but we achieved it together as a family and it will be a lasting memory.

Langanan Waterfall. Located within the Poring Hot Springs Substation of Kinabalu Park.

From the park entrance, it's 3.4km of trekking through lowland tropical forest. It took us about 2 hours to reach the waterfall.

The trail takes you by Kipungit Waterfall. This is a short 15 minute walk from the entrance. It was very peaceful in the morning and in the afternoon it was full of families having fun in the water.

After walking another 15 minutes you will come to a bat cave. We could smell it before we saw the bats flying in and out of the cave.

Our family hike to Langanan Waterfall was probably the toughest we have ever done. There were lots of steep sections, and it was incredibly humid. Along the trail, there are two water crossings (four as you return the same way) before reaching the waterfall. The kids did them with ease. I slipped a couple of times and decided to walk through the shallow water.

But it was 100% worth it. The beautiful scenery helped to keep us going. There were some amazing large trees we stopped to admire along the way.

Langanan Waterfall is an impressive 120 metres high and even though it was dry season, the water was rushing down.

Hiking the super humid forest of Sabah, Borneo will be a lasting family memory.

Hiking in Kinabalu Park HQ. We didn't climb Mt. Kinabalu but we did lots of hiking during our stay in Kundasang.

In Kinabalu Park HQ we hiked 3 trails. If hiking is not your thing, one of the trails gently follows the river whilst still being surrounded by the forest.

We spent a good part of the day exploring the park and loved every minute. The scenery was stunning. At times we were in dense forest with ferns all around us and trees towering above.

There are fascinating trees, plants and insects and many different mushrooms.

Our favourite part was when the clouds started rolling in through the trees. The misty forest felt magical.

All information and more about our family stay in Kundasang can be found on our blog.

Kundasang, Sabah. Our 2 day itinerary is now on the blog.
We stayed in a themed accommodation, did lots of hiking and had great views of Mt. Kinabalu.

This first group of photos are from around the town area.

1. This plane was one of many photo props along the side of the road.

2. Kundasang Market is open daily with a wide range of fruit and vegetables.

3. We tried snake fruit for the first time.

4. The other side of Kundasang Market.

5. Roundabouts in Kundasang feature a large cabbage.

6. Kundasang War Memorial. Many Australians died in Sabah after being kept as POW. We were moved by stories of people that risked their lives to help others.

7. Delicious coffees and views at

8. Mt. Kinabalu from the viewpoint on the way to Kundasang.

Our one night stay on a secret beach in Borneo.
The kids were already impressed that we had to get a boat over to our accommodation Bigfin Divers Kota Belud Beach Resort.

You can rent kayaks and paddleboards and book diving trips with Big Fin Divers.

The tide was way out when we arrived so we just waded around the warm shallow water. Another family called us over when they spotted a lion fish and we walked around seeing many other fish swimming around the coral.

It rained the whole afternoon and night and we weren't mad about it. Our family chalet had two hammocks and a seat where we chilled, reading and writing.

The next day the tide was up and the waves were quite choppy. We were happy to just take it easy, strolling along the beach. A lot of plastic water bottles wash up onto the beach which made us appreciate that most of our accommodation in Sabah provided drinking water we could fill our reusable bottles with including Big Fin.

Included in our booking were 3 meals and they were all so incredibly delicious. Lunch and dinner was curry, rice, veg and fruit and at breakfast the banana pancakes were the best I've ever had!

During the night we heard a strange honking noise and a Google search proved we were hearing proboscis monkeys in the jungle behind us.

We aren't usually good at relaxing and the intention was to rent kayaks and book the night jungle walk but the weather had other ideas and this was the perfect place for the relaxation we didn't realise we needed.

Big Fin beach Resort Kota Belud was part of our road trip from Kota Kinabalu. More info and the itinerary is over on the blog.

Early Autumn in Japan ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‚
we have been to Japan twice during early Autumn from late October into November.

I love this season in Japan. The weather is perfect for long travel days - not too hot or too cold.
Mt. Fuji has its iconic white snow capped top.
There are stunning colours to be seen all across the country.

During our visits at the start of Autumn, the colours were mostly just beginning to change, although higher areas had already peaked. The way the Japanese people embrace the change of seasons is a beautiful thing.
