On November 20th, WRU was alerted to a crocodile sighting in Kinarut, where a concerned resident reported spotting the reptile lurking in the stream near his house. Without delay, a team of WRU rangers rushed to the scene and conducted thorough monitoring in search of any traces or signs of the reptile. A trap was then strategically installed, and the local community was advised to stay vigilant and report immediately if the animal was captured.

A week later, the rangers revisited the site after receiving a call that the reptile had been captured. Drawing on years of experience handling the species, the team successfully transferred the animal safely into its translocation cage and temporarily held it at the rescue centre before being handed over to a licensed authority.

Crocodiles are often feared and despised due to their nature, yet many forget their crucial role in maintaining a balanced ecosystem. By understanding their importance and practicing safe coexistence, humans and wildlife can share the environment harmoniously.

This month, WRU, together with Sabah Wildlife Department (SWD), Seratu Aatai, and the Danau Girang Field Centre (DGFC), successfully collared three jumbos: two males standing over 8 feet and 7 feet tall in Kinabatangan, and a female, nearly 8 feet tall, in the Kalabakan forest. The entire process was carried out safely, and the elephants were closely monitored afterward to ensure they adapted well to the collars and experienced no anaesthetic side effects.

𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰?
- GPS collaring is one of the most effective tools for elephant conservation, allowing researchers to track the movements of Bornean elephants in real-time via satellite. By monitoring their daily movements, researchers can identify feeding areas, migration routes, and potential conflict areas, providing vital insights to improve coexistence and guide long-term conservation planning for the species.

This mission's success reflects the dedication and teamwork of everyone involved. With each elephant collared, we take a step closer to protecting Sabah's wildlife and ensuring the species thrives for generations to come. We remain committed to strengthening this partnership to advance conservation efforts.

𝐒𝐀𝐅𝐄𝐆𝐔𝐀𝐑𝐃𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐆𝐈𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐒 𝐎𝐅 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐓 𝐈𝐍 𝐋𝐀𝐇𝐀𝐃 𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐔

Deep in the forest of Lahad Datu, WRU joined hands with the Sabah Wildlife Department (SWD) and WWF-Malaysia for a two-day elephant collaring operation. With a shared mission to safeguard Sabah's wild elephants, the team navigated through a challenging terrain in search of the Bornean giants.

As a result, two female jumbos, each standing over 7 feet tall, were successfully collared following strict safety procedures and proper sedation under expert supervision. Once regained consciousness, the elephants were released back into their natural habitat, now carrying a tool that serves as a silent guardian, guiding us toward a deeper understanding to better protect them.

💡𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰?
- Bornean elephants can travel over 40 kilometres (25 miles) a day in search of food and water. Tracking their movements helps researchers understand their routes, providing vital data for long-term conservation planning.

We feel truly honored to be part of this crucial mission and inspired by the unwavering commitment shown by everyone until the very end. We hope this collaboration will continue to strengthen, ensuring even greater impact for conservation in the future.
