Before you source for hose — run through these 5.
1. Correct pressure rating
Does the hose's rated working pressure exceed the system's maximum operating pressure? Account for surge pressure, not just steady-state.
2. Bend radius not exceeded
Tight bends at the fitting end are one of the most common causes of early hose failure. Check the minimum bend radius for your specific hose — and add a support bracket if needed.
3. End fittings are the right type and torque
Mismatched end fittings or under-torqued swages leak. Confirm the fitting material is compatible with both the hose and the media.
4. No torsional stress
The hose should be installed without twisting. A twisted hose under pressure is a hose that fails prematurely.
5. Movement clearance is accounted for
If the hose is bridging two components that move (pumps, vibrating equipment), make sure there's enough slack and the routing doesn't bind at operating temperature.
Simple checks. Big difference in service life.

Both rubber bellows and metal expansion joints absorb movement in a piping system. But they're not interchangeable.
Here's when to use which:
Rubber bellows — best for:
→ Lower temperature applications (typically up to 120°C)
→ Systems with vibration from pumps or compressors
→ Noise and shock absorption
→ Lower pressure systems
→ Cost-sensitive applications where conditions allow
Metal expansion joints — best for:
→ High-temperature applications (steam lines, exhaust systems)
→ High-pressure systems
→ Corrosive media requiring specialised alloys
→ Situations where fire resistance is required
The crossover point is usually temperature and media compatibility. If your system runs hot, runs aggressive chemicals, or needs to meet fire-safe specs — metal is the only sensible choice.
If you're in the design or procurement phase, it's worth having this conversation early — retrofitting the wrong type mid-project is painful and expensive.

5 signs your hose needs replacing now:
1. Visible cracking or blistering on the outer layer
2. Kinks that don't spring back when released
3. Fittings showing signs of corrosion or weeping
4. Reduced flow rate with no other explanation
5. It's been more than 2 years without inspection
The material matters too. PTFE-lined hoses for chemical resistance. Stainless steel braided for high pressure and temperature. Rubber for general purpose and vibration absorption.
Getting the spec right from the start is cheaper than emergency replacement.

Pipeline pigging = sending a device (the "pig") through a pipeline to inspect, clean, or gauge the internal condition without stopping flow.
The pig signaller is what tells you where the pig is.
