Sin-Pen Colony

A pop-up festival-within-a-festival celebrating the shared heritage between Singapore and Penang for The George Town Festival 2014 in Penang, Malaysia.

Singapore and Penang, islands. Once we were joined by the Crown, as Straits Settlements. Both were ports-of-call receiving and entertaining explorers, missionaries and merchants from mysterious worlds across the seas. We both gave refuge to political exile Sun Yat Sen, and stood with him in his revolution for democracy and change. Penang and Singapore developed largely migrant societies, dominated

by the Chinese. Our early immigration policies resulted in both having a wonderfully multiracial mix which has shaped respective social and cultural identities. We both boast a distinctive Straits Chinese heritage, in all its glory. Singapore and Penang. Not just islands. Sister islands. The Sin-Pen Colony is about a personally curated group of Singaporean or Singapore-based creatives in the areas of theatre, music, food, fashion, words and photography, immersing themselves through process and party into the open arms of Penang. The Sin-Pen Colony is about celebrating shared culture and heritage while show-casing new directions. So talk c**k, sing song, eat, drink, mix and mingle with fellow islanders and joint histories, new friendships, exciting ideas and different world views will emerge!

“Two Houses” 28-31 August 2014
An original site-specific theatre production. Commissioned by GTF 2014. Written and directed by Lim Yu-Beng.

“Singapore House II” 15 - 31 August 2014
The second installment of a specially selected cross-section of Singapore’s cutting edge creative set. We hold a retail rave. We out our indie instrumentalists. We set the table for sneaky supper clubs. We opt for apt art.

“Islands and Cities” - A Singapore-Penang Youth Playwriting Immersion Workshop

Immersion - 5-10 June 2014. Dramatised Reads - 30-31 August 2014

6 teens with playwriting aspirations from Penang and Singapore. 10x10min original plays from them, mentored by celebrated Malaysian playwright residing in Singapore, Huzir Sulaiman, and then their works presented in a dramatic read by professional Malaysian and Singaporean actors, directed by acclaimed Penang-born, Singapore-based director Claire Wong.
