Haizam Azman — Lukah

From shadow, something begins to move.

A form. A presence.
Almost human.

Lukah draws from the traditional Bubu dance of Perak, where a simple fish trap becomes more than an object, taking on life through rhythm, gesture, and imagination.

Guided by circular movement and the pulse of drumbeats,
the body enters into dialogue with form, blurring the line between object and being.

In this space, memory stirs.
Ritual lingers.

And something long familiar feels newly alive.

For SASANAKALA, WindRiver Productions presents:
Varushaali

A name carried through song, found within fragments of voices once sung across the plantations of colonial Malaya.

Who was she?
Or perhaps...... who were they?

Inspired by research from filmmaker Gogularaajan Rajendran, Varushaali reflects on the lives of Malaysian-Indian women whose stories of labour, longing, and endurance remain largely untold.

Through movement shaped by classical and folk vocabularies, the work becomes an offering, a way of remembering, questioning, and giving form to voices that continue to echo across time.

A presence imagined.
A history felt.

Jejak Sunyi: The Jawi Peranakan of Penang

A reflection on a community once woven into the fabric of early Penang, the Jawi Peranakan, known for their roles in trade, publishing, and Islamic scholarship.

Through restrained and contemplative movement, the work traces a subtle transformation where identity is not erased through conflict, but gently absorbed into the present.

What remains are fragments.
Echoes.
Traces that linger in silence.
