Ling Goh
I’m a traditional opera artist also a Teochew puppeteer!
带起整场戏的气势;
While the audience’s eyes are fixed on the performers on stage,
beside the stage, there is always a group of people like them.
Some tune their instruments,
some keep the rhythm on the drums,
and some have spent decades of their lives
within this small musicians’ corner.
They do not stand under the spotlight,
yet before an actor even begins to sing,
their music is already heard.
A single beat of the gong and drum
sets the energy for the entire performance;
a passage of string music
carries the joy, sorrow, and emotions of the characters on stage.
Their names are rarely remembered by the audience,
but with a lifetime of dedication,
they have accompanied every performance,
year after year.

Over the past year, I have stepped into many opera troupes,
documenting stories that may one day fade with time.
Many people have watched Teochew Opera,
but few have had the opportunity to step inside a Teochew opera troupe.
Some grew up learning the art from their elders,
some stayed because of their passion,
while others have devoted most of their lives to preserving this traditional art form.
Documentation is not just about preserving images and videos.
It is about letting future generations know
that there were people who loved their culture deeply and dedicated their lives to it.
—————
As long as the opera lives, and the people remain,
the story continues.
I'm Ling Goh.
Welcome to Inside the Opera Troupe.

This episode features a veteran lead opera performer with decades of experience,
as well as a musician who has accompanied Cantonese opera for more than 20 years.
One performs on stage,
while the other plays music below the stage.
One gives voice to the performance,
while the other carries the rhythm of the entire opera.
Without them,
the opera could not go on.

Opera tents, the sound of drums and gongs, and voices singing on stage.
There is still a group of people quietly holding on to this art form.
Some work hard to keep the troupe going, some play music behind the scenes, and some, in this generation, are still learning and performing opera.
Maybe traditions do not suddenly disappear. There are simply fewer and fewer people willing to devote their youth to keeping them alive.

I always thought traditional opera was becoming more and more distant from young people.
But through this interview, I met a 23-year-old young performer who is still seriously learning and performing Cantonese opera.
He said, “Traditional opera truly needs young people to carry it on.”
Maybe traditions do not suddenly disappear. There are just fewer and fewer people willing to stay.

Most Cantonese opera troupes in Malaysia are based in Kuala Lumpur,
so it’s actually quite rare to see a Cantonese opera troupe in Penang.
This time, during the temple thanksgiving celebration at Hong Mao Bridge Head Jade Emperor Ancient Temple in North Seberang Perai, a Cantonese opera troupe was specially invited to perform, and the atmosphere was amazing.
I also had the chance to meet renowned Cantonese opera performer Kwong Chin Hung 🎭
The moment the drums and gongs started, and the performance began,
the experience was truly something you can’t get just by watching videos online.
Some traditional cultures need to be experienced in person, sitting inside the opera tent,
before you truly understand why they are worth preserving.

When I was young, watching my mother do paper shadow puppetry felt like the most ordinary part of daily life.
Only after growing up did I slowly begin to understand that behind these seemingly ordinary acts of persistence lies a journey filled with challenges and sacrifices.
Some people spend their whole life protecting a craft, not to be seen or remembered, but simply in the hope that it can continue to live on.

Today, I was invited to perform at the 135th anniversary celebration of the Selangor & Kuala Lumpur Teochew Association.
After a year, I finally got to share the stage with an old friend again and perform Teochew opera together.
Some partners are special.
They don’t need much time to readjust.
Even after being apart for so long,
once we started singing, that familiar feeling came right back.
Teochew opera has come this far
not only because of the dedication of performers on stage, but also because of every audience member who continues to support it.

First time collaborating with dancer Aida.
Also joined by mezzo-soprano Chai Lin ,Indian percussionist Jayakumar and india dance Jeeven in this presentation.
Different bodies, voices, and rhythms intertwined within the same space, allowing diversity to emerge naturally and merge organically.
Art knows no boundaries between you and me—echoing and shaping one another through our differences.
Hope this is not just a single encounter, but the beginning, and that more cross-disciplinary collaborations can continue to grow, extend, and unfold in the future.
Some people do not choose opera. They are simply born into it, with life already beginning in the troupe.
He does not read Chinese, but language was never a boundary. Through another script, he found his own way into this art, little by little.
Without formal training under a master, he stood by the side, watching and memorising, until he, too, became someone on stage.
Even in a time like this, here are still people willing to do things that seem out of place. Keeping an ancient art alive, little by little, in the present.
