The Internet of Things (IoT) is a self-configuring and adaptive system consisting of networks of sensors and smart objects whose purpose is to interconnect “all” things, including every day and industrial objects, in such a way as to make them intelligent, programmable and more capable of interacting with humans. IoT creates numerous challenges and opportunities for engineering and science.
For example, in the future, enormous numbers of sensors will be deployed. It is often incredibly expensive to replace sensor batteries once they are in the field. Therefore, one major challenge is to design low power sensors that require no battery change. This creates a demand for energy-efficient designs and energy harvesting, including low-power circuits and communication protocols.
Connected devices will produce oceans of data. We need layers of intelligence to transform this data into wisdom. In this new computing era, analysis of data and its context will play a key role.
None of us likes to expose our personal or confidential information to the public. We also don't want people to provide false information that changes the proper action of the system. Therefore, another IoT challenge is data security and privacy.

Many opportunities in Internet of Things http://electroiq.com/blog/2014/07/internet-of-things-big-numbers-many-opportunities/
Internet of Things: big numbers, many opportunities | Solid State Technology Whatever forecast one uses for the future of the Internet of Things in terms of connected objects or business opportunities, the IoT will be big.
Happy with your lightning fast 4G LTE connection? Engineers have started tinkering on the next generation cellular technology - 5G.
What will 5G be? What it will not be is an incremental advance on LTE. The previous four generations of cellular technology have each been a major paradigm shift that has broken backwards compatibility. And indeed, 5G will need to be a paradigm shift that includes very high carrier frequencies with massive bandwidths, extreme base station and device densities and unprecedented numbers of antennas. It will also be highly integrative: tying any new 5G air interface and spectrum together with LTE and WiFi to provide universal high-rate coverage and a seamless user experience. To support this, the core network will also have to reach unprecedented levels of flexibility and intelligence, spectrum regulation will need to be rethought and improved, and energy and cost efficiencies will become even more critical considerations.
