🐟 Better seed, better fish. Better outcomes for farmers.

Led by WorldFish and International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) through the CGIAR Scaling for Impact Program, the consultations brought together hatcheries, nurseries, traders, farmers, researchers, private sector actors and government representatives to explore how digital tools can improve seed quality, transparency and trust.

From QR code verification and hatchery governance to genetic integrity and quality assurance, the discussions generated valuable insights that will support the pilot implementation of the SeedCompact model.

By improving access to verified, genetically improved fish seed, the initiative aims to strengthen livelihoods and build more sustainable aquaculture systems across Bangladesh.

🌱 How can real-time data help climate-proof aquaculture?

In the climate-vulnerable southwest region of Bangladesh, WorldFish deployed three Internet of Things (IoT) monitoring systems to collect continuous pond water quality data and strengthen climate-informed aquaculture management.

The systems track key parameters including water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, ammonia (NH₃) and turbidity, providing real-time insights to support better decision-making under changing climate conditions.

The IoT systems have been installed at:
📌 The WorldFish CARP genetic improvement farm
📌 A small-scale carp nursery
📌 A small-scale grow-out farm producing WorldFish G3 Rohu

By generating high-frequency environmental data, this initiative improves understanding of how carp species respond to climate variability, support evidence-based management interventions, and strengthen climate risk management in aquaculture production systems.

Implemented under the CGIAR Climate Action Science Program’s Area of Work 2: Digital advisories and climate risk management, this work advances more resilient, productive and climate-smart aquatic food systems.

Local leadership is central to ocean action

Today at , WorldFish Director General Dr Essam Yassin Mohammed will moderate Plenary 6: A Bottom-Up Approach to Ocean Action: Empowering Local Community Leadership.

Across coastal communities, indigenous territories and small-scale fisheries, local leaders are already driving solutions that strengthen livelihoods, restore ecosystems and build resilience.

This conversation will explore how locally led approaches can shape more inclusive and sustainable ocean futures and why lasting impact begins with the people closest to the challenges and opportunities.

What examples of community-led ocean action have inspired you?
