👁️ Trichiasis in Children – What Parents Should Know

Have you noticed your child frequently rubbing their eyes or complaining of discomfort? It could be a condition where eyelashes grow inward and touch the eye surface (Trichiasis).

🔍 Common Symptoms:
• Eye redness
• Tearing or watery eyes
• Frequent blinking or rubbing
• Feeling like something is in the eye
• Sensitivity to light

⚠️ Possible Causes:
• Misaligned eyelash growth
• Eyelid inflammation or infection
• Congenital (present since birth) eyelid conditions

💡 What Can Be Done?
• Mild cases may only need monitoring
• Temporary relief by removing the misdirected lashes
• Lubricating eye drops to reduce irritation
• In some cases, minor surgery may be needed for long-term solution

👨‍👩‍👧 What Parents Can Do:
• Observe if your child rubs eyes often
• Avoid letting them rub excessively (can worsen irritation)
• Keep the eyes clean
• Seek professional eye examination early

Happy New Year everyone. I’d like to share a real case as a reminder to all of us.

A 36-year-old young adult man came for an eye check because his left eye had been blurry since 6 months ago, and recently worsened. He had never worn glasses, had no medical issues, and no family history of eye problems.

After a thorough eye examination, i found out his macula is abnormal. Amsler test showed distortion, central vision was affected. I then asked more in-depth questions about his daily habits, and only then did I discover that he has a habit of using his handphone in the dark, especially before sleep. He often spends hours scrolling with the lights off, and has been doing this consistently for the past 7–8 years.

Then i referred him to ophthalmologist for further management.

I’m sharing this to raise awareness, as this eye problem once common in older people is now increasingly affecting young adults.

Avoid using your phone in complete darkness, keep some light on, limit prolonged screen time, and don’t ignore blurry or distorted vision. Eye problems don’t always come with pain, by the time you notice vision changes, damage may have already started. Prevention and early eye checks are the key.

So, come and have your eye check before it is too late！

想和大家分享一个真实案例，也当作一个温馨提醒。

一名 36 岁的顾客前来做眼睛检查，表示他的左眼模糊已经有大约半年，最近几天明显变严重，才意识到需要尽快检查。他之前从未戴过眼镜，没有慢性疾病，也没有家族眼疾史。

经过详细的眼睛检查后，发现他的黄斑部出现异常，中心视力已受影响，Amsler 测试也显示线条扭曲和模糊。进一步了解生活习惯后才发现，他长期有关灯玩手机、睡前看手机的习惯，而且一看就是好几个小时，这样的生活方式已经持续了 7–8 年。

之后我转介他到眼科医生进行进一步检查与治疗。

我分享这个是为了提高大家的警觉，因为这种原本常见于年长者的眼睛问题，如今却越来越多出现在年轻人身上。

不要在黑暗中看手机，减少长时间盯屏幕。眼睛出问题不一定会痛，当你开始察觉视力改变时，伤害可能已经发生。预防与定期眼睛检查，真的非常重要。
