Happy International Cat day

Happy International cat day! Vivien's affection and interest for felines was well known during her lifetime, and she was photographed on many occasions with her pet cats. In 1946, Laurence Olivier presented her with her first Siamese cat, New Boy, named after the New Theatre in London’s St Martin’s Lane (now the Noël Coward Theatre), and who travelled with the couple everywhere as well as appearing in a number of magazine articles of the time. New Boy was a regular on set at Shepperton Studios during the shooting of Julien Duvivier’s 'Anna Karenina' where Leslie Baker, who shot today's photo of New Boy and his owner took a series of images that appeared in 'The Illustrated London News', to whom Vivien stated: “Once you have kept a Siamese cat you would never have any other kind. They make wonderful pets and are so intelligent they follow you around like little dogs.’

New Boy was unfortunately run over by a car in 1948 whilst the Oliviers were touring in Australia with the Old Vic Company, but Vivien's affection and interest in cats was undimmed, and she would go on to have many other treasured Siamese companions.

See today's story for Roger Furse's charming watercolour 'Vivien Reading with Tissy' who was one of her first pet cats; a black-and-white stray with unusual green and turquoise eyes. The watercolour was sold at Sotheby's for £62,500 shattering it's estimate of £1,500 (saved to our 'Memorabilia' highlight.)
