El Castillo (Spanish for “the castle”) is a Mesoamerican step-pyramid just two hours away from Tulum. Built by the pre-Columbian Maya civilization sometime between the 9th and 12th centuries, El Castillo served as a temple to the Feathered Serpent deity, Kukulkan.

The structure is 24 m (79 ft) high, plus an additional 6 m (20 ft) for the temple. Still standing tall and strong, this ruin is one of the great wonders of the world alongside the Great Pyramids of Giza and the Taj Mahal.
