Africa holds nearly 20% of the world’s cattle, yet accounts for only a small share of global milk production. While dairy development efforts have traditionally focused on increasing production, new insights from the 2nd IDF Africa Regional Dairy Conference suggest that consumption may be the more important factor.
Research presented by Nigerian dairy expert Olusegun Tunmise Oloruntobi found that per capita dairy consumption is the strongest factor distinguishing Africa’s dairy regions—more significant than herd size, milk yields, or farm numbers. The findings highlight that the strength of a dairy sector depends not only on how much milk is produced, but also on how much people consume.
North African countries such as Algeria, Egypt, and Morocco demonstrate this link, with higher dairy consumption supported by favorable policies, affordability measures, and strong consumer demand.
