Through our Executive Director Misheck Shadreck Mithi we joined YASD in a two-days validation workshop for its five-year strategic plan (2026–2030). The workshop provided a valuable platform to reflect on priorities, align on key thematic areas, and strengthen the overall strategic direction.

We are very proud for the good news that in 2026 national budget the Government of Malawi will remove all taxes on assistive devices and equipment to all forms of disabilities, to enhance accessibility and promote inclusive participation in society. This is one way of supporting persons with disabilities.

This comes after a collective advocacy Malawians including our organisation have done. Last year in November 2026 our organisation engaged the Ministry of Finance on the same matter and others. Hope to be implemented soon.

REPORT REVEALS WIDESPREAD DISCRIMINATION AGAINST PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES IN MALAWI

A recent report by the Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has exposed widespread barriers faced by persons with disabilities in accessing mainstream services in the country.

The report, titled "Public Enquiry on Access to Services by Persons with Disabilities," highlights the numerous challenges in health, education, employment, political participation, and disaster management initiatives.

The report, released on February 2, 2026, calls for a multi-sectoral approach to address these barriers and provides recommendations to improve accessible infrastructure, staff training on inclusive service delivery, recruitment of specialist teachers, and enforcement of employment quotas.

It also recommends initiating inclusive electoral processes to enable meaningful participation of persons with disabilities in politics and public life.

Despite existing local and international disability legal frameworks that promote and protect disability rights, persons with disabilities continue to face systematic barriers across all sectors.

The MHRC's enquiry aimed to assess the extent to which persons with disabilities in Malawi can access and benefit from services in key areas, including health, education, employment, and political life.

The report's findings highlight the need for urgent action to address these disparities and ensure that persons with disabilities can thrive and participate fully in society.
