A special acknowledgment goes to Ooredoo Maldives Techfin and Ahmed Numan, Head of Fintech & Partnerships, for their pivotal role in successfully bringing PayPal into the Maldives digital payment ecosystem.
I want to extend my deepest appreciation to the Business Center Corporation (BCC) for their relentless dedication to helping our local small businesses thrive.
But the true highlight of this milestone is what it represents: this is a historic opening of opportunities for local service providers targeting our homegrown tourism industry.
By bridging the payment gap, we are finally unlocking the true potential of the Maldivian creator economy. This is a monumental win for local photographers, videographers, makeup artists, hairstylists, musicians, and every other local talent who has struggled to build a sustainable career serving international guests.
The opportunity we have at our doorstep is staggering. With roughly 2 million visitors to the Maldives annually, our local creators now have seamless financial access to a massive market:
Over 400,000 honeymoon couples** seeking to capture their once-in-a-lifetime memories.
- Hundreds of thousands of families** wanting to document their multi-generational vacations.
- Thousands of models, influencers, and global brands** flying in for high-end professional shoots.
For the past 15 years, I have navigated this incredible but challenging landscape. Like many, I’ve lost thousands of dollars to disabled foreign accounts, exorbitant bank charges, and the hurdles of third-party workarounds. PayPal changes that.
However, as we celebrate this financial access, we must address the other half of the equation: **physical access.**
Throughout my career visiting private island resorts, securing permission to work has consistently been a hurdle. Every resort rightfully has its own visiting policies and transport fees, but the current fragmented process creates unnecessary friction for local professionals making direct bookings with guests.
This is the perfect time for our friends at the **MMPRC, the Ministry of Tourism, and the Ministry of Arts** to collaborate and empower this economy to truly thrive. We need a regularized, managed system for local access to resorts. By implementing a monitored framework—complete with a transparent ratings and blacklist system—resorts can confidently grant access to legitimate local professionals while effectively filtering out anyone flagged for unethical behavior or acting like paparazzi.
I strongly hope to see organized sessions and dialogues established for our local creators and the related service community to build out these operational frameworks.
By streamlining resort access alongside this new financial freedom, we are opening the door for every Maldivian who wants to earn a living from our tourism industry.

Instead of a pen, my camera became my voice, capturing the essence of my island nation. I sought to reveal not just a destination, but a feeling—the heart of the Maldives. Each click of the shutter was a line in a story I was born to tell, a story of light, color, and connection.
I learned to work with the unique, luminous quality of the island-specific light. The bright, unwavering sun of midday, perfect for revealing the vibrant turquoise of the lagoon and the stark white of the water villas. The golden hour, when the sky explodes in a fiery kaleidoscope of oranges, pinks, and purples, turning a simple beach into a canvas of epic romance. My camera became an extension of my eye, learning to anticipate how the light would paint the scene, whether it was on a couple silhouetted against a Maldivian sunset or a seaplane resting on the glassy water.
Post-production is where the story truly comes to life. It’s where the raw images are transformed to reveal the incredible, saturated colors that define the Maldives. The crystal-clear water, teeming with life, the soft, impossibly white sand, and the lush green of the palm trees are all brought to their full, vibrant potential. It's a meticulous process, but one that is essential for creating images that are not just beautiful, but timeless and epic.
My journey with a camera took me across the vast expanse of the Indian Ocean, from the tranquil solitude of a one-island-one-resort haven to the bustling energy of the Greater Male Area. I captured intimate moments—a couple sharing a kiss with the sun as their witness, or paddling in a clear-bottom kayak over a vibrant coral reef.
I also documented the tranquil beauty of the islands themselves, from a lone sailboat gliding across a glassy sea to a flock of birds gathered on a pristine sandbank.
I've learned that telling a story with a camera here requires a deep understanding of the islands themselves—their rhythms, their light, and their unique charm. It's about more than just pointing and shooting; it’s about revealing the soul of a place often called "The Pearl of the Indian Ocean." Every picture I take is a highlight from my journey, a postcard from paradise, and a testament to a story told without words.
Key Takeaways for Your Photography Project
If you're planning a trip or event to the Maldives, here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Choose a Photographer with Island Experience: The light and environment here are unique. An experienced photographer who knows how to work with these elements is crucial for getting the best results.
- Embrace the Colors: The Maldives is known for its incredible palette. Be prepared for photos that are rich with the blues of the ocean, the greens of the palms, and the whites of the sand.
- Consider a Variety of Perspectives: Don't limit yourself to land-based shots. Aerial photography, when done with the proper permits, can capture breathtaking views of the atolls and reefs that are impossible to get from the ground.
