Japan has introduced autonomous drones that reforest damaged land 10x faster than human workers — using AI, LiDAR, and biodegradable seed pods.

Developed by Kyoto engineers, these drones fly over fire-damaged or deforested areas, scanning soil composition and moisture. Using onboard AI, they determine optimal planting spots and shoot biodegradable pods containing native seeds, nutrients, and fungi into the ground.

Each drone carries over 300 pods and can replant an area the size of a football field in under an hour. They operate in swarms, recharge via solar stations, and adapt in real time to terrain changes.

Initial tests in wildfire-hit Kumamoto showed over 80% of seeds germinating — a huge leap in ecosystem recovery.

These drones aren’t just reforesting — they’re restoring balance: improving soil quality, attracting insects and animals, and locking in carbon at scale.
