The photograph below documents a formative period of my medical scientific career in the midโ1980s, during my work and training in Moscow.
At that time, I had the privilege of collaborating with the research group responsible for the early development of MILTA, a multimodal biophysical technology emerging from the Soviet Unionโs aerospace and cosmic research ecosystem. Unlike later commercial adaptations, the original MILTA systems were conceived within a multidisciplinary environment where millimetreโwave physics, lowโintensity laser biomedicine, and engineering design intersected to address complex questions of human physiology and adaptation.
My work brought me regularly into the laboratory of Prof. Christoforov, the chief constructor engineer of MILTA. He was a scientist of remarkable technical depth and human warmth, widely respected within the Soviet scientific community. His laboratory was equipped with the full spectrum of electronic instrumentation characteristic of that era โ oscilloscopes, signal generators, prototype assemblies โ reflecting the rigorous experimental culture of Soviet applied research.
A distinctive feature of that laboratory was a wooden velvetโcovered chair, yellow with a black tinge, which Prof. Christoforov repeatedly identified as the seat used by Yuri Gagarin, the first human in outer space, during his visits to the institute. Each time I entered the laboratory, he would gesture toward it and say:
โSit here. This is Gagarinโs chair.โ
In the context of Russian scientific tradition, this gesture carried a meaning far deeper than hospitality. It signified recognition, collegial respect, and inclusion within a lineage of scientific endeavour that bridged aerospace engineering and biomedical innovation. Sitting in that chair was a symbolic reminder of the continuity between the early cosmic program and the emerging field of biophysical medical technologies.
This photograph, taken in that very laboratory beside Prof. Christoforov, represents one of the most meaningful moments of my scientific life. It captures not only a personal memory but also a historical intersection โ the environment in which the foundational concepts of MILTA were shaped, tested, and refined.
Sharing this image today allows me to honour the legacy of Prof. Christoforov, the scientific culture that shaped my early career, and the origins of a technology that would later influence clinical practice far beyond the borders of its creation.

Mauritius at 58 is a remarkable story โ a small island that has repeatedly reinvented itself, survived exploitation, and still manages to radiate cultural richness and resilience. And yet, the legacy of colonialism didnโt evaporate on 12 March 1968. Political independence is one thing; psychological, economic, and structural independence is another.

Independence gave Mauritius the right to self-govern, but it didnโt erase the centuries of extraction, hierarchy, and trauma that shaped the island.
โข African slaves were denied humanity.
โข Indentured Indian labourers were denied dignity.
โข Chinese and Muslim traders navigated a system designed to exclude them.
โข Creole communities inherited the deepest scars with the fewest reparations.
The flag was raised โ but the structures remained.

An excerpt from my keynote presentation "Mechanisms of Action of Biomodulating Laser Therapy and Its Clinical Applications for Treating Cardiovascular Diseases, Diabetes Mellitus, Obesity, and Cancer Linked to Ecological Stressors" at the XX International Symposium โEcological and Physiological Problems of Adaptationโ on Friday, 27 June 2025, hosted by the Medical Institute of the Russian Peoplesโ Friendship University (RUDN) in Moscow, Russia.
Biomodulating Laser Therapy (BLT), also called photobiomodulation, is a noninvasive treatment using low-intensity red or infrared lasers with organ-specific frequencies to help reverse pathological processes.
Photons are absorbed by cellular photo-acceptors like cytochrome C oxidase in mitochondria, boosting ATP production and activating cellular metabolism.
The principal effects are as follows:
1. Inflammation is mitigated through the reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokine levels.
2. Oxidative stress is decreased by the activation of endogenous antioxidant systems.
3. Microcirculation is enhanced via the stimulation of neo-angiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels)
4. Cellular proliferation is modulated, resulting in cellular stimulation or suppression, including apoptosis induction in tumour cells.
5. The immune system is activated to bolster the body's defense against disease.
Biomodulating laser therapy is utilised clinically in the management of cardiovascular disorders due to its ability to achieve several therapeutic effects:
1. Enhancement of endothelial function and improvement of microcirculation;
2. Reduction or normalization of blood pressure;
3. Promotion of myocardial microcirculation, including neo-angiogenesis;
4. Considerable decrease in ischaemic myocardial areas;
5. Lowering of inflammation markers such as C-reactive protein.
The application of Biomodulating Laser Therapy has been associated with the following outcomes:
1. For ischaemic heart disease, episodes of angina pectoris (chest pain) were reported to have stopped, and normalization of ECG readings was observed.
2. In cases of myocardial infarction, a reduction of 80% in dead myocardial zones was noted.
3. For cardiac arrhythmia, a normal sinus rhythm was restored in 85% of cases.
4. In chronic cardiac insufficiency, improvements in left ventricular ejection fraction were observed, along with a decrease in Functional Class according to the New York Heart Association (NYHA).
This video explores the groundbreaking world of ๐๐ข๐จ๐ฆ๐จ๐๐ฎ๐ฅ๐๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ฅ๐๐ฌ๐๐ซ ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ซ๐๐ฉ๐ฒ, a cutting-edge non-invasive approach that potentially transforms the treatment of chronic cardiovascular diseases.
