ELSA Malta

In accordance with statutory requirements, ELSA Malta held its National Council Meeting (NCM) on Monday, 4th May 2026. During the meeting, proposed amendments and motions were discussed and approved. Following this, elections were held, and the new National Board for the term 2026–2027 was elected through votes cast by the members of ELSA Malta.

The newly elected National Board is as follows:

President: Sarah Pace
Secretary General: Gianni Farrugia
Treasurer: Alexander Apap Bologna
Vice President for Marketing: Sarah Gauci
Vice President for Academic Activities: Megan Ekezie
Vice President for Competitions: Timothy Farrugia
Vice President for Seminars and Conferences: Timothy Desira
Vice President for Professional Development: Zoya Sultana

Following the conclusion of the NCM, the newly elected Board convened its first official meeting during which the following appointments were made:

Director for Public Relations: Rebecca Abdilla
Director for Competitions: Yani Pace
Director for Academic Activities: Maya Farrugia
Director for Seminars and Conferences: Francesco Formosa
Director for Legal Publications: Abigail Bonnici
Director for External Relations: Thea Marie Fountain
Director for Internal Management: Sebastian Mifsud
Director for Social Policy and Human Rights: Luke Spiteri

The outgoing National Board extends its sincere gratitude to everyone who contributed to the work and growth of the association throughout the past year. The newly-elected National Board for the term 2026/2027 will assume office on the 1st July, 2026.

I had a great time taking part in the 3rd edition of the ELSA Malta Union Debate 💙

Held under my auspices, this event brought together legal professionals and students for a dynamic debate. This year’s motion tackled an increasingly important issue in Worldwide Criminal Law: Should Artificial Intelligence Be Held Criminally Liable?

My thanks go to Minister Jonathan Attard, the Shadow Minister Joe Giglio, and the MP Justin Schembri for supporting such an initiative, as well as to Dr Charles Mercieca and Dr Ian Gauci for mentoring the students.

Above all, I would like to praise the ELSA Malta team for organising such an excellent event. With almost 100 people attending, it was a fun and meaningful learning experience for students, tackling difficult topics that truly matter to society.

This is what university life should be about. We need more of this!

ELSA Malta and WH Partners are pleased to announce a Tax Seminar, with particular focus for second year law students soon to sit for the PBL3003: General Introduction to the Principles of Taxation examination and assignment.

The seminar will take place on the 14th of April, at 2pm ONLINE. In the seminar, lawyers specialising in the area of taxation law will guide students through the core principles of taxation and the law pertaining to it.

Dr. Ian Gauci is the second professional speaker to take part in ELSA Malta’s Union Debate! He will be forming part of the team arguing against the motion.

As an experienced technology and commercial lawyer, as well as an active academic and spokesperson on the convergence of law and technology, Dr. Gauci’s contribution will be key in shaping a well-rounded discussion on such a niche yet increasingly important topic.

Dr. Charles Mercieca is the first professional speaker on ELSA Malta’s Union Debate! He will be forming part of the team arguing in favour of the motion.

As a prominent lawyer and part-time lecturer in the Maltese Criminal Law sphere, Dr. Mercieca’s presence on the panel adds a level of expertise needed to tackle such a multifaceted title.
