📚 Melitensia Book of the Month – September 2026
đź“– Red List of Endangered Crafts, written and published by The Malta Crafts Foundation.
This book documents traditional Maltese crafts at risk of disappearing to support their safeguarding, while, as a research report, it provides insight into their current state. Inspired by international best practices, the publication evaluates a range of local artisanal skills and classifies them according to their level of vulnerability: “extinct,” including għonnella tailoring and traditional kenur making; “critically endangered,” such as Għarb knife making and tberfil signwriting; “endangered,” including Maltese patterned tile making and wrought-iron smithing; and “currently viable,” such as flower arranging and candle making.
Based on input from local artisans, the research assesses each craft’s viability and challenges, while supporting funding, education and apprenticeship initiatives that help preserve the heritage of Maltese crafts.

Imsejsa fuq ir-rispons ta’ artiġjani lokali, din ir-riċerka tassessja l-vijabbiltà u l-isfidi ta’ kull sengħa, waqt li tappoġġja inizjattivi ta’ finanzjament, edukazzjoni, u apprendistat li jgħinu biex jiġi ppreservat il-wirt tas-snajja’ Maltin.

Today, we were happy to welcome staff members from the Faculty of Law and Administration at Casimir Pulaski Radom University in Poland at our Library.
We showed them around the Main Library and the Law and Theology Library, sharing a little about our collections, spaces and services. It was a pleasure to have them visit and exchange experiences along the way.

We are deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Professor Ä orġ Mallia.
Professor Mallia leaves behind an extraordinary legacy in Maltese literacy, writing, children’s literature, illustration and comics. Through his work, he influenced generations of readers and helped make reading in Maltese accessible, engaging and enjoyable.
His Pullu series introduced countless children to reading in Maltese, making his contribution to Maltese literacy and children’s literature particularly significant. As an author and illustrator, he inspired young readers and nurtured a love of books and storytelling.
He was also one of the pioneering figures in Maltese comics. From his work on Avventura and Il-Komik to his celebrated One Family and Żepp strips, he played an important role in shaping Malta’s comics tradition and bringing humour, satire and social commentary to generations of readers.
Through his writing, cartoons, academic work, broadcasting and contribution to Malta’s literary community, Professor Mallia enriched our cultural life in countless ways.
His contribution to Maltese literacy, literature and comics will remain an important part of his legacy.
Our heartfelt condolences go to his family, friends, colleagues and all those whose lives he touched.
May he rest in peace. 🕊️
