One of the easiest ways to reduce print costs at Dormax Press has nothing to do with negotiating price.
It’s our coordination and advice.

When your specs, timelines, and production methods are coordinated better:

· Fewer rush charges
· Fewer last-minute changes
· Greater press efficiency

The result? A better product at a better cost.
Not because it’s cheaper—but because it’s smarter.

Dormax Press: Coordinate professionally, print better.

Why does your printed blue look purple?
The answer is likely in your ink choice.

CMYK vs. Spot Colour — Do you know the difference?

Not all colours in print are created the same way. While most everyday prints rely on CMYK, high-end packaging often uses something else entirely: Spot Colours .

Here’s the breakdown:
SPOT COLOURS
Pre-mixed, specific inks (think Pantone).
Ultra-consistent colour reproduction
Perfect control for critical brand colours
Unlocks vibrant hues outside the CMYK range

CMYK (Process Colours)
Built on the fly by layering Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black.
Colour can shift slightly depending on press conditions

So, how do you choose?
It all comes down to:
▫️ Colour accuracy needs
▫️ The printing method being used
▫️ Budget and setup costs

Mastering this distinction in prepress saves time, money, and ensures the final print meets your expectations perfectly.

Which do you use most for your projects—Spot or CMYK? Tell us in the comments!

Ever wondered why we call them “uppercase” and “lowercase” letters?

It dates back to the early days of printing. Around 1450, when the printing press was introduced in Europe, printers arranged individual metal letters in wooden cases. The capital letters were placed in the upper compartments, while the smaller letters were stored in the sections below.

Over time, these practical terms became part of everyday language—giving us “upper case” and “lower case.”

A small detail from print history that has lasted for centuries.

To print designers:

Screen fidelity ≠ press fidelity.

Smooth gradients, fine details, and delicate highlights often break in print—not because the file changed, but because screens don’t simulate dot gain.

Print translates your design into physical dots that shift with pressure, ink, plate, and substrate. What reads as “safe” on screen can become unstable on press.

This isn’t a design error—it’s an assumption.

The real question: are you designing for appearance or for press behavior?

Paper does factor in to quality:

In printing, the transfer of ink onto paper is not solely dependent on pressure; it is also aided by capillary action, which draws ink into the paper fibers. This natural phenomenon is essential to achieving high print quality.

When paper fibers are adequately moist and well-structured, capillary action efficiently pulls ink deep into the substrate, resulting in prints that are rich, crisp, and fully developed. Conversely, if the paper is too dry or its surface too hard, capillary pull weakens. This can lead to prints that appear broken, faint, or uneven.

It’s important to recognize that the issue may not always lie with machine settings. Often, the condition of the substrate—its moisture content and structural integrity—plays a critical role in print outcome.
