MICAS Symposium unites architects, historians, curators, and sociologists to investigate how contemporary art institutions take shape within historic environments—with particular attention to the relationship between architecture, museum formation, and public cultural presence. It pays special attention to small island and small-state contexts, where public aspiration places unique pressures on both institutional identity and architectural form.

Kont taf li ‘Mamajamma’, l-akbar xogħol artistiku fil-wirja ‘𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗴𝗶𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗛𝗼𝗱𝗴𝗲𝘀:𝙈𝙚𝙡𝙖’, kien kruċjali fil-proċess tal-artist? Kien l-ewwel xogħol li ħadem fuqu Hodges, u fl-istess ħin kien l-aħħar xogħol li lesta.
Fit-tarf tal-pixxina li hemm fil-pittura ‘Mamajamma’ nsibu l-figura solitarja ta’ tfajla bi platt kbir f’idha – simili għal Salome fil-pittura ta’ Caravaggio. Hija toħloq pont bejn żewġ dinjiet. Kif jgħid Hodges: “Kienet speċi ta’ pont għal xi ħaġa akbar u aqwa – b’sisienu fi spirtu ogħla u intenzjoni nobbli.”
Ejja u ara kif l-imgħoddi u l-preżent jiltaqgħu fuq skala monumentali.

Did you know that the largest work ‘Mamajamma’ in the exhibition ‘𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗴𝗶𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗛𝗼𝗱𝗴𝗲𝘀:𝙈𝙚𝙡𝙖’ holds a unique place in the artist's process? It was the very first work conceived by Hodges, yet it was also the last to be completed.
At the far end of the pool within the painting of ‘Mamajamma’ stands the solitary figure of a young woman carrying a large platter—her stoop echoing Caravaggio’s Salome. She bridges two worlds. As Hodges puts it: “A way to bridge this to something bigger and better—rooted in all the things of high spirit and the right intent.”
Come and see how past and present converge on a monumental scale.

𝗜𝗻 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗱 𝗛𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗻𝗲𝘆 (𝟭𝟵𝟯𝟳–𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲)
MICAS joins the international arts community in mourning the passing of David Hockney, one of the most influential and visionary artists of the past century.
Across more than six decades, Hockney continually reinvented the possibilities of painting, drawing and photography, always reminding us that, as he believed, “the camera cannot convey the intense emotion of a painted portrait.”
His legacy holds particular significance for MICAS. Our Artistic Director, Edith Devaney, worked closely with David Hockney over many years, curating landmark exhibitions at the Royal Academy before becoming Managing Director and Curator of the David Hockney Foundation and David Hockney Inc. Their collaboration was founded on a shared pursuit of artistic excellence and an enduring friendship.
Reflecting on watching Hockney at work, Edith had described his “absolute concentration to the exclusion of everything else” and recalled the remarkable fluidity with which he painted, observing that “it’s fascinating to see the colour he’s picking up.”
Hockney’s insatiable curiosity, generosity of spirit and belief in the act of seeing transformed contemporary art has inspired generations across the world.
MICAS Executive Chairperson Phyllis Muscat paid tribute to Hockney as an artist who had taught people how to simply ‘look’.
“As he once said, what an artist does for people is to bring them closer to something – indeed art is about sharing an experience, a mission statement if there was ever one for an institution like MICAS.
“We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and all those whose lives were enriched by his extraordinary vision.”
With registrations now underway, the 𝗠𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗦 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘆𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 is fast approaching.
Join us for two days of focused discussion with an exceptional line-up of international speakers exploring the relationship between heritage, architecture, museum typologies, contemporary art, and the particular realities of small states.

Lura fil-Ħanut tal-MICAS: il-pubblikazzjoni 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗴𝗶𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗛𝗼𝗱𝗴𝗲𝘀: 𝙈𝙚𝙡𝙖.
Dan il-katalgu mill-isbaħ jiddokumenta l-korp ta’ xogħol ġdid maħluq waqt il-waqfa tal-artist internazzjonali f’Malta li huwa msawwar mill-kultura u l-istorja tal-gżira kif ukoll l-esperjenza mgħajxa tiegħu hawn.
It-titlu tal-pubblikazzjoni ġej minn kelma li Hodges iltaqa’ magħha diversi drabi fil-ħajja ta’ kuljum f’Malta: mela, li ħafna drabi tintuża biex timla jew bħala tweġiba, u wkoll qabel l-espressjoni ta’ xi ħsieb jew idea. Dan il-katalgu fih 30 pittura ġdida kollha maħluqa esklużivament għal din il-wirja – fosthom l-akbar xogħlijiet tal-karriera tiegħu. Kollox ma’ kollox, 𝙈𝙚𝙡𝙖 tirrappreżenta l-aktar korp ta’ xogħol ambizzjuż tiegħu sa issa.

Now back in stock at the MICAS shop: the 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗴𝗶𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗛𝗼𝗱𝗴𝗲𝘀: 𝙈𝙚𝙡𝙖 publication.
This stunning catalogue documents an entirely new body of work created during the internationally acclaimed artist’s move to Malta— shaped by the island’s culture, history, and his own lived experiences here.
The title of this publication draws from a word Hodges encountered frequently in daily Maltese life: mela, often used to mean “so” or “well,” and typically preceding the expression of a thought or idea. It features over 30 new paintings made exclusively for this exhibition, including the largest works of his career, 𝙈𝙚𝙡𝙖 represents Hodges’ most ambitious body of work to date.
