Over the past two weeks, prices have increased sharply as instability in the Middle East pushed oil markets into a volatile period, highlighting how quickly costs at the pump can change.

A large portion of what motorists pay is not for the fuel itself but for taxes. Countries such as Germany, Denmark and Finland apply significantly higher taxes per litre, placing them among the most expensive. This reflects a political decision as much as an economic one.

The Civil Protection Department has issued a Yellow Weather Warning in effect from tomorrow morning across the Maltese Islands.
