Detector design and distance guideline for Singapore SS 645:2019
General detector layout
Detectors are to be installed throughout required protected areas. Each room is to be separately protected. If walls, partitions, or storage racks come within 300 mm of the ceiling, each section should be separately protected. A single alarm zone is limited to 2000 m², and the number of detectors in one zone should not exceed 40.
Keep a clear space of at least 300 mm radius and 600 mm depth below each detector. Detectors should also be kept away from isolated ceiling obstructions such as beams, ducts, and light fittings by at least twice the depth of the obstruction.
Near special locations, detectors are to be placed within 1.5 m of fire doors that separate protected from unprotected spaces, and also within 1.5 m of shaft openings where required. For large floor openings over 9 m², detectors are to be installed around the perimeter, spaced not more than 7 m apart.
Heat detectors
Heat detectors should be installed at the highest point of the ceiling where appropriate. If beams or joists are less than 300 mm deep, the detector may be installed on the underside of the beam or joist.
For flat ceilings, the figure in SS 645 shows typical spacing of 7 m between adjacent heat detectors/lines and 3.5 m from wall to nearest detector line. Linear heat detectors follow the same basic spacing and must also be within 3.5 m of any wall or partition; each roof apex should have a detection line.
Heat detector types A to D are selected by ambient temperature and whether rapid temperature rise is expected. Type E point heat detectors have a maximum coverage of 9 m².
Smoke detectors
For flat ceilings, the distance from any point on the ceiling to the nearest point smoke detector shall not exceed 7 m, and the spacing between point smoke detectors shall not exceed 10 m.
The nearest row of smoke detectors to a wall or partition shall be not less than 300 mm away and not more than half the allowable detector spacing. Under normal flat-ceiling spacing, that means a maximum of 5 m from wall.
Point smoke detectors shall not be installed closer than 400 mm to an air supply outlet, and where ceiling fans are installed, not closer than 400 mm outside the fan blade circumference.
