If you’re preparing for an English proficiency test, with a reading section, you’ve probably searched for resources to help you. And you’ve probably discovered pages and pages of exam strategies for answering specific question types. But, trying to apply these strategies without understanding the content of a passage is madness!

You need to understand 95% to 98% of the vocabulary in a reading passage to fully understand it. That’s a lot! If you understand less than 95% of a reading passage, and you try to use exam strategies to answer the questions, then you’re wasting your time.

Analyze the content of the reading passage first. Learn the vocabulary, look up any grammar structures you don’t know, and make sure you truly understand everything. Then you can move on to question strategies.
