Pre College Program


Phaung Daw Oo’s Pre-College Program (PCP) was founded in 2012. It is a post secondary curriculum directed towards gifted students with leadership abilities to provide further education to enable them to continue to develop into and engaged community leaders who will be able to contribute to the democratic development of Myanmar and its community institutions. The program is also designed to help connect graduates to educational opportunities at foreign universities, given that the current capacity of local universities remains somewhat limited and highly regulated. PCP has four principal objectives:

To provide students with the skills required to design community development projects that focus on community responsiveness and engagemen
Improve student access to university education by improving English and critical thinking skills. Promote global political awareness and encourage social citizenship and engagement in democracy. Improve general civic education and leadership skills through service learning. The program is completely English-immersive and stresses the building up of critical thinking and analytical skills. The program also creates a space for practical educational experiences while maintaining a supportive atmosphere for learning. The program is designed to support graduates who are committed to serving their communities through Myanmar’s development and transition process to become effective leaders. PCP is a one year long and the program is organized into three terms. An average of, six hours of class, five days per week is offered. Each of the three terms is organized into three months of academic teaching, followed by another six months of Service Learning, which is a social engagement practicum that begins after their 10 months of academic studies. The Service Learning component is designed to enable PDOPCP students to apply their learning towards the benefit of community needs across Myanmar, build up their confidence as leaders, and gain the type of practical understanding that comes only from real field experience. That is not to say, however, that learning through the academic terms is confined to the classroom. Community outreach, education fairs, and extra-curricular activities are encouraged to build students’ leadership abilities and values of civic engagement. Curricula are especially designed for fostering students’ creativity and understanding of social, political and economic issues in the region and nation.
