Writing a small journal because something has been on my mind lately.

Why is it that when a woman speaks up for herself, people are so quick to call her difficult, dramatic, or “too much”?

Sometimes I think we’re just more comfortable with women who stay quiet, keep the peace, and don’t question too much. But when a woman starts saying what she really thinks, stands up for herself, or refuses to go against what she believes in, suddenly her character gets questioned.

Maybe she isn’t difficult. Maybe she’s just not afraid anymore.

I think about women like Maya Angelou, Serena Williams, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and so many other women throughout history who have been judged, criticized, and misunderstood simply for using their voices and standing firmly in who they are.

I’m learning that being a strong woman doesn’t mean you have to be loud or prove yourself to everyone. Sometimes it’s simply knowing what you stand for and having the courage to stand by it, even when people don’t understand you.

You can be kind and still have boundaries.
You can be graceful and still speak your mind.
You can respect people and still disagree with them.

And no, speaking up doesn’t mean we’re always right. I’m still learning too.

But I don’t ever want to be in a place where I’m scared to say what I feel just because someone might misunderstand me. I’d rather be honest and misunderstood than silent and unhappy with myself.

Maybe that’s something more women need to remember. You don’t have to make yourself smaller just because your voice makes someone uncomfortable.

And maybe your voice will be the reason another woman finds hers.
