The great mosque of Tangier is a large mosque in the area of Zoco Chico in the center of Tangier, Morocco. It was built on the site of an old Portuguese cathedral that in turn stood in a Roman temple dedicated to Hercules.The mosque dates back to the period of Moulay Ismail and was expanded in 1815 by Moulay Sliman. Mohammed V visited the mosque on April 11, 1947, and gave a historical speech in the Mendoubia Gardens.

This recently refurbished museum is housed in the former sultan’s palace of Dar El Makhzen. The focus is on the history of the area from prehistoric times to the 19th century. Exhibits are well-presented in French and Arabic only. Work your way anticlockwise around the first courtyard before heading inside to the rest of the displays, followed by a walk in the charming Andalusian garden.
