HIISI DRAGON 🐲

Hiisi is a forest spirit in Karelian-Finnish mythology. This dragon-shaped sketch was inspired by descriptions stating that «Hiisi» originally referred to a sacred grove, and later to the spirit dwelling within it.

I created this initial sketch back in 2021. In 2023, I refined it specifically for the exhibition «Karelian Mythology: The Ancient Codex.» Finally, in 2025, it was colored especially for the artbook «Karelian Gods and Where They Dwell.»

This small piece has certainly come a long way.

ДРАКОН ХИЙСИ 🐲

Хийси — дух леса. Эскиз в виде дракона появился благодаря описаниям, согласно которым изначально Хийси называли священную рощу, а позже — и самого духа, обитающего в ней.

Этот набросок был создан мной еще в 2021 году, в 2023-м — доработан специально для выставки «Карельская мифология: древний свод». А в 2025 году он был покрашен, специально для артбука «Карельские боги и где они обитают».

Вот такой длинный путь у этой небольшой работы.

A character of Karelian-Finnish mythology - Hiisi’s Horse. 🔥

A fiery steed with a blazing forelock and thick smoke billowing from its mane.In the Kalevala, Hiisi’s horse appears as a trophy in a suitor’s trial. Lemminkäinen received this task from Louhi, the Mistress of Pohjola.

To calm the fiery stallion, Lemminkäinen summoned the magic of the god Ukko. The ruler of the weather helped the hunter by putting out the flame of the fire-maned horse, showering it with abundant rain and snow.

Огненный конь с пламенной челкой и густым дымом из гривы.

В «Калевале» конь Хийси предстает добычей в сватальном испытании жениха. Такое задание получил Лемминкяйнен от хозяйки Похъелы Лоухи.

Для того чтобы успокоить огненного коня, Лемминкяйнен призвал магию бога Укко, и повелитель погоды помог охотнику: погасил пламя огненногривого коня, насыпав обильно дождя и снега.

The World Tree and the Alatyr Stone 🌳

The World Tree is one of the most famous mythological concepts, connecting all realms of existence. For our ancestors, it served as the axis mundi (the axis of the world): its canopy reached the gods, its trunk represented the mortal realm, and its roots descended into the underworld, the domain of spirits.

This archetype echoes across many cultures. In Norse mythology, it is the ash tree Yggdrasil; for the Celts, the sacred oak Bile; and similar symbols can be found among Native Americans and Siberian shamans. In some traditions, the vertical axis of the universe took the form of a massive cosmic pillar holding up the heavens.

In Russian folklore, this center of the cosmos is described as a legendary tree growing on the mythical island of Buyan, standing right beside the mysterious, glowing Alatyr Stone.
