Ethiopia's BRICS Success Through the Lens of Medemer Diplomacy

Ethiopia is pursuing a sophisticated foreign policy approach that blends its long-standing diplomatic legacy with contemporary global transformations, prioritizes its national interests, and expands partnerships with diverse global powers.

A prominent milestone of this approach is Ethiopia’s accession to the BRICS alliance. However, this success extends far beyond mere membership; the core diplomatic achievement lies in Ethiopia’s ability to advance its national agenda and secure a shared consensus within the platform.

The formulation and steering of this diplomatic direction have been decisively led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD).

Driven by the Prime Minister’s direct and visionary leadership, Ethiopia expressed its interest in joining the BRICS group. Its application was accepted at the 15th BRICS Summit held in South Africa in August 2023, and the country officially joined the alliance in January 2024. Today, Ethiopia stands proudly as one of the 11 member states, playing a significant role within the framework.

In line with the Prime Minister's vision that Ethiopia should forge mutually beneficial relations with diverse international cooperation platforms rather than aligning with a single power bloc in a shifting global order, the nation is actively expanding its international cooperation and influence. Its BRICS membership directly stems from this strategic orientation.

Ethiopia’s entry into BRICS represents a strategic paradigm shift rooted in its long-term national interests, recognizing the immense economic, political, and diplomatic benefits the membership offers.

Beyond conventional diplomatic efforts, the Prime Minister’s high-level summit diplomacy and direct engagement with the leaders of China, Russia, India, and other BRICS member states played a vital role in conveying Ethiopia’s historic contributions to the world.

ኢትዮጵያን ስናስብ፣ ሌት ተቀን በጽናት በመቆም ሀገርን ከጠላት ለመጠበቅ ወጥተው ለሚያድሩት ብርቱ የፀጥታ ኃይሎቻችን ቅድሚያ ሳንሰጥ ስለ ሁለንተናዊ ከፍታ ማሰብ ፈጽሞ አይቻልም፡፡ ለዚህም ነው በዚህ የጽናት ቀን፣ ለሀገረ-መንግሥታችን ዘላቂነትና ሉዓላዊነት ሲሉ ውድ ሕይወታቸውን የከፈሉትን የጀግኖቻችንን ታሪካዊ መስዋዕትነት በከፍተኛ ሀገራዊ ክብር የምንዘክረው፡፡
ዛሬ ላይ ሀገራችን በራሷ ዕውቀትና በልጆቿ አቅም የላቀ የቴክኖሎጂ ብቃት ያላቸውን ሰው አልባ አውሮፕላኖችን፣ ዘመናዊ የታጠቁ ወታደራዊ ተሽከርካሪዎችን፣ ከባድ መሣሪያዎችንና መድፎችን፣ እንዲሁም ተተኳሽ ጥይቶችን በራሷ ወታደራዊ ኢንዱስትሪዎች ማምረት ችላለች፡፡ ይህ በራስ የመቆም አቅም፣ የሕዝባችን ሰላምና የሁለንተናዊ ኢኮኖሚ እድገታችን ጽኑ መሠረት በመሆኑ፣ ሀገራዊ ጽናታችንን በተጨባጭ ልማትና በጠንካራ የመጠበቅና የመከላከል አቅም እያረጋገጥን የኢትዮጵያን ዘላቂ ብልጽግና እናጸናለን! ከቃል ባለፈ በተጨባጭ ስኬት የቆመችው ኢትዮጵያ!
ትናንት “ኢትዮጵያ ተነሥታለች” ስንል ምኞት ሳይሆን ዛሬ በተጨባጭ ያረጋገጥነው እውነት ነው! ከታላቁ ሕዳሴ ግድብ ማማ እስከ ዘመናዊው የኮሪደር ልማት፣ ከቢሾፍቱ ሜጋ አውሮፕላን ማረፊያ እስከ ማክሮ ኢኮኖሚ ሪፎርም ድረስ ሀገራዊ መነቃቃታችን በተግባር ተመስክሯል። ይህ ለውጥ በዜጎቻችን የኑሮ ደረጃ፣ በከተሞች መዘመንና የሥራ ዕድል ላይ እውነተኛ ብርሃን ከመሆኑም በላይ ለልጆቻችን የነገ ብሩህ ተስፋን የሚሰንቅ ታላቅ ርዕይ ነው። ከእንግዲህ ወደኋላ አንመለስም! በጀመርነው ታሪካዊ የማንሠራራት ጉዞ የልማት ኃይላችንን ይበልጥ በማፋጠን የኢትዮጵያን ትንሣኤ ወደ ዘላቂ ብልጽግና ከፍ እናደርጋለን።

የእመርታ ቀን
አባቶቻችን የኢትዮጵያን ዳር ድንበር በደምና በአጥንታቸው አስከብረው ታላቅ ሀገር አውርሰውናል፤ ዛሬ ደግሞ እውነተኛ ሉዓላዊነትን እያረጋገጥን ያለነው ከልመናና ከጥገኝነት በተላቀቀው አዲሱና ታሪካዊው መንገዳችን ነው! በሚሊዮን በሚቆጠር ዶላር ስንዴ ከማስገባት ተነስተን ዛሬ የአፍሪካ ቀዳሚ ስንዴ አምራች በመሆን የሚሊዮን ዶላሮችን ወጪ ማስቀረት ችለናል። በ«ሌማት ትሩፋት» የምግብ ዋስትናን በተግባር እያረጋገጥን፣ በ«ኢትዮጵያ ታምርት» ንቅናቄም አዳዲስ ኢንዱስትሪዎችን በማስፋፋትና የሥራ ዕድል በመፍጠር ሉዓላዊነታችንን እያረጋገጥን እንገኛለን። ከዚህ ቀደም የማይደፈሩና አይነኬ ይባልላቸው የነበሩ ከባድ የማክሮ-ኢኮኖሚ ሪፎርም ውሳኔዎችን በቁርጠኝነት በመተግበር፤ የሀገራችንን ኢኮኖሚ በፅኑ መሠረት ላይ እየገነባን እንገኛለን። እነዚህ ሁሉ ታላላቅ ድሎች ኢትዮጵያ በሚያጋጥሟት ውስጣዊና ውጫዊ ፈተናዎች ሸብረክ ሳትል በፅናት መጓዝ መቻሏን የሚያረጋግጡ ህያው ምስክሮች ናቸው፤ ይህ የእመርታ ጉዟችን ለመጪው ዓመት የሰነቀው ተስፋ እጅግ ግዙፍ ነው!

Tibor Nagy Urges Egypt to Embrace New Nile Reality, Recognise Ethiopia’s Right
Former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Tibor Nagy says Egypt must accept a new regional reality and recognise Ethiopia’s right to develop its water resources in an interview with The Pulse of Africa.
Cairo can no longer rely on its historical dominance to dictate terms over the Nile, Nagy stressed.
He also argued that mutual respect—not historical dominance—could pave the way for a lasting, win-win Nile agreement.
Nagy also calls Ethiopia’s pursuit of Red Sea access a legitimate and essential aspiration.
