🦟 West Nile virus in Europe

As summer progresses, five countries – 𝗜𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘆, 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗰𝗲, 𝗥𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗮, 𝗕𝘂𝗹𝗴𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 – have reported 163 locally acquired human cases of West Nile virus infection so far this year.

📊 This is slightly above the 10-year average for this point in the season, but still far below the same period in 2024 (382 cases) and 2018 (385 cases) – two years with especially high circulation.

🐦🐴 West Nile virus is also being detected in birds and horses, but in lower numbers than in those intense seasons.

🌡️ With current weather conditions favouring mosquito activity, more human cases and animal outbreaks are expected in the coming weeks. In past years, the highest transmission was seen in August and September.
