R.I.P. Sir Roger Norrington (16.03.1934 - 18.07.2025), one of the great conductors of our time, who will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him.

I will forever cherish his friendship, humour, positivity and love for life. His deep devotion to music and quest to serve the composer was continually inspiring. He was always kind and generous with his time, offering valuable wisdom and advice from which I took great stimulation and clarity. Whilst much of it related to the historical approach of symphonic conducting (which few others could offer so authoritatively), Sir Roger also religiously executed an innovative conducting method that was focused around phrasing, articulation and - perhaps most importantly - the people in the room. He was a humanist wholly dedicated to bringing joy to both his musicians and audience.

A master at conducting in half the number of gestures of his colleagues with twice the impact, his ability to insist on style whilst performing in a nuanced, free and highly musical manner was unrivalled. His unique and uncompromising energy with the musicians was totally infectious. I was always particularly impressed by the respect and collaborative approach he offered his fellow performers.

As an interpreter, few came close to his genius and care for the truth. Indeed, Sir Roger was one of the few conductors that I never got bored watching, proof of his sincerity and authenticity as both a musician and man. He was a giant of a pioneer who blessed the world not only with his challenge to tradition but also with his charm and grace. He was one of those refreshingly rare finds that took his musical work extremely seriously yet never himself. It was because of his care for the score rather than for his own importance that many adored him. Yet others vehemently disagreed; a great testament to his strength of character and unrelenting vision. After all, the new generation of today’s conductors now seem to exist to please us. But not Sir Roger. For that, he will leave a legacy unlike no other, one which will forever influence my work.

Thank you, Sir Roger.
