🔬 MRU Science and Innovation Week is underway!

The week kicked off on September 28 with a pre-conference day exploring a range of timely topics, from environmental monitoring with drones and the responsible use of artificial intelligence in research to academic integrity, the societal impact of research and sustainability.

From Academic Freedom to the “Intellectual Big Bang”: Academic Leaders from Around the World to Gather in Vilnius

From 14 to 16 October, Vilnius will host the anniversary event of the Magna Charta Universitatum Observatory for the first time in Lithuania, bringing together university leaders, higher education experts and students to discuss the role of universities in a rapidly changing world.

This year’s conference theme is “Beyond Resilience: Universities as Active Value-Driven Agents in a Changing World”. The programme will focus on academic freedom and institutional autonomy, the role of universities in strengthening democracy, security challenges, artificial intelligence, and how higher education can help shape the future of society.

“Universities must not only speak about their values. We must nurture and defend them,” says Prof. Dr. Inga Žalėnienė, Rector of MRU and President of the Conference of Rectors of Lithuanian Universities.

On 14–15 October, the event will take place at Mykolas Romeris University, before moving to Vilnius University on 16 October for the official Magna Charta signing ceremony. The ceremony will be opened by VU Rector Prof. Dr Rimvydas Petrauskas, followed by a keynote address by European Commissioner Andrius Kubilius on the role of universities in achieving technological and societal breakthroughs and the “Intellectual Big Bang”.

During the ceremony, the Magna Charta will be signed not only by new university signatories, but also by the European Women Rectors Association (EWORA).

On October 1, during Science and Innovation Week, participants of the international scientific-practical conference “Human Rights Amidst Modern Challenges: The Ukrainian-Lithuanian Experience” will be invited to listen to music. 🎻

From 3:10 to 3:30 p.m., in Room I-414, Myroslava Kotorovych – Honoured Artist of Ukraine, Associate Professor at the National Academy of Music of Ukraine, and violinist with the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra – will perform.

🎼 The programme will feature works for violin by Ukrainian composers Kyrylo Stetsenko and Hanna Havrylets.

October 2 marks the final day of MRU Science and Innovation Week, dedicated to reflecting on the week’s activities and celebrating the achievements of young researchers and members of the MRU community.

The week will be summarised by Dr. Eglė Malinauskienė, MRU Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation.

One of the main highlights of the closing day will be the conversation “Does Progress Help Us Live Better? Culture, Values and Human Choices”, featuring Prof. Dr. Eugenijus Skerstonas, author of ten books and albums on lifestyle culture and Knight of the French Order of Arts and Letters. He will be joined in conversation by Saulius Kromalcas, Head of the Innovation and Technology Transfer Office at MIC.

The event will also include the presentation of nominations to members of the MRU community and awards to the laureates of the Study Innovation Promotion Fund.

How can drones help monitor the environment?

MRU students are invited to register for the Science and Innovation Week lecture “Drone-based Environmental Monitoring”, delivered in English by Dr. Miguel Inácio.

Discover how drones and satellite data are used to assess soil, water and vegetation conditions, and how the collected information can be integrated into decision support systems and hydrological modelling.

The lecture will feature practical examples from the international projects InBestSoil, Engage - Water4All and CREATE.

MRU Science and Innovation Week: What to Expect on 1 October?

October 1 is Researchers’ Day at MRU Science and Innovation Week, dedicated to professional networking among MRU, ERUA and Ukrainian researchers, international cooperation and strengthening research competencies.

The English-language programme will bring together researchers and experts to explore human rights, information security and research data management.

🇱🇹🇺🇦 The International Scientific and Practical Conference “Human Rights Amidst Modern Challenges: the Ukrainian-Lithuanian Experience” will bring together Lithuanian and Ukrainian perspectives on contemporary human rights challenges.

As part of the CRA-COMP project, a discussion on “Information Security and Domain Protection in Small and Medium-sized Enterprises” will address information security and domain protection in today’s digital environment.

🔎 Researchers will also be invited to join an online lecture by João Aguiar Castro, “Effective Strategies for Research Data Management: Turning FAIR Principles into Practice through Data Stewardship”.

⚖️ The Story of Lithuania’s First Female Judge, Elena Jackevičaitė

On 16 October, at the international conference “Women in Law: celebrating 100 years since the first female judge in Lithuania,” Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dovilė Sagatienė from the Law School of Mykolas Romeris University (MRU) will deliver a presentation titled “Elena Jackevičaitė: The Story of Lithuania’s First Woman Judge.”

This year marks 100 years since Elena Jackevičaitė was appointed as a judge. Her story represents an important turning point in Lithuania’s legal history, when women gained opportunities not only to study law but also to practise it professionally.

In her presentation, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dovilė Sagatienė will explore Jackevičaitė’s life and professional career, the circumstances surrounding her appointment as a judge, and the broader historical and regional context.

This cultural event Chuseok (the Korean Autumn Celebration) is meant to introduce the King Sejong Institute (KSI) and Mykolas Romeris University (MRU) communities to one of Korea’s most important traditional celebrations.

During the event, participants will have the opportunity to learn more about the Korean language and culture by taking part in various cultural activities: they will make traditional crafts, participate in a quiz, win prizes, and try out other activities related to Korean culture.
