RPA is the Lesotho nuclear regulatory body established under Radiation Protection Agency Act, 2018 mandated to ensure beneficial use of nuclear energy, protection of human health and the environment against harmful effects of ionizing radiation.

Our CEO - Mr. Mqekela Khesa and Manager Inspection, Policy Development and Enforcement - Mojalefa Sello are part of this meeting to share experiences, peer review, establishing collaborations and strategizing on how to establish Nuclear/ Radiation safety regulatory framework in Africa.
Later the team will be joined by the Acting PS Mr Apesi Ratsele who will be representing Hon. Mofosi for high level meeting.
Establishing Radiation safety infrastructure is not a liability to the government but an economical advantage to the Country and protection of current and future generations.
Lesotho comes in this meeting after establishing Regulatory Authority (RPA) in 2025 and has done enormous strides in establishing Regulatory oversight in Lesotho in Health, Industry, Construction, etc.

Objectives of the Workshop
1. To go through the regulatory framework with stakeholders once again
2. To adress the gaps identified during review and assessment of submitted applications
3. To present and discuss to final draft of the Radiation safety regulations
4. To provide platform for questions and discussions

𝐑𝐏𝐀 𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐚-𝐁𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲!
The Radiation Protection Agency is currently hosting a regional workshop for radiation facility operators in the northern region at Butha-Buthe District.
Following the review of license applications, RPA identified common challenges among facilities, including but not limited to:
▪️ Shielding calculations
▪️ Safety assessments
▪️ Emergency Preparedness & Response plans
To address these gaps, RPA has launched a series of regional capacity-building workshops covering the northern, central, and southern parts of the country.
These sessions will also introduce the draft radiation protection regulations, giving operators early insight into upcoming requirements.
This initiative reflects RPA’s commitment to:
Strengthening compliance
Supporting operators
Promoting a strong national radiation safety culture
