Here in Lesotho Winter Duration for Solar starts today, 21 March and will end in 21 Sept; that is 6 months full.

During this time we will experience the following:

1.Temperatures will decline
2. Solar Radiation will decline
3. Number of Sun Hours will shorten

This will collectively lower energy being harnessed from the Sun per day; thus Solar geysers will not be able to heat water fully using SunEnergy (Solar). On average Solar energy will be contributing 50% towards water heating and Electricity will also be contributing 50%; but this is mainly impacted by hot water usage.

The impact on this will be felt more between 1 May and 30 July. Peak effect will be on 21 June as it is the shortest day

Why is it that Solar geyser doesn't heat water well in winter as compared to summer?

There are 3 reasons for this and they are outlined below:

1. Less solar energy in winter. Solar radiation is less in winter, meaning not enough energy to heat water.

2. Short winter day. This means shorter time for heating and as it tries to heat water, the Sun sets.

3. Cold water temperature is too low. This means more time and more energy is needed to heat the water and unfortunately Time is already short and Energy is already less.

In summary, in winter Solar contributes to 50% and electricity to 50% towards water heating cost (note that in Lesotho winter is from 1 April to 30 Sept and that is 6 months; but severe winter is 1 May to 30 Jul, that is 3 months).

In summer, solar contributes to 80% while Electricity to 20%

Yearly contribution of solar is 65%

Evetho the above cases apply, the hot water usage and geyser size play an important role in determining the exact contribution of Solar energy to water heating cost; less usage and bigger geyser size implies solar energy will contribute more, and the opposite is true.

Note that if you real need extremely hot water by Solar even in winter, you will need to double the size of the Solar heater. This will solve the winter problem, but in summer if you don't use hot water that much, water will always be boiling and spilling (you can solve this by covering one Solar heater and uncover it in winter or use more hot water often).
