90 Degree outside corners with Terraforce blocks can be achieved by cutting the blocks, with care and precision.

Tools: A masonry saw or angle grinder with a diamond blade is typically used to cut Terraforce blocks to the desired angle.

Accuracy: Accurate cuts are essential to ensure that the blocks fit snugly together, preventing gaps that could affect the wall's integrity.

Do you know that you can also choose a flat face finish?

A flat face finish on Terraforce® blocks refers to a design feature where the visible face of the block has a smooth, flat appearance. It is achieved by simply turning the “flat” side of the standard Terraforce block facing outwards. The flat face finish can create a clean, modern look in architectural and landscaping projects.

Why Terraforce?

Aesthetic Appeal: The design of Terraforce blocks allows for planting, which helps them to blend into the natural environment. Over time, the blocks can become covered with vegetation, making them less obtrusive.

Versatility: Their half-moon interlock design allows for managing both convex and concave curves effortlessly, and the wall angle can be adjusted from vertical to shallow slopes. The blocks can be oriented to face round or flat surfaces turned outward. Additionally, steps can be constructed by reversing the blocks, and handrail or fence posts can be securely set within the blocks for added functionality.

Durability: Made from high-quality concrete, Terraforce blocks are durable and capable of withstanding various environmental conditions.

Eco-friendly: The ability to plant vegetation within the blocks promotes green infrastructure and contributes to environmental sustainability.

Structural Integrity: Despite their aesthetic and environmental benefits, the blocks do not compromise on structural stability, making them suitable for both small and large-scale projects.

Need a very high wall? No problem with Terraforce..

This extensive Terraforce® retaining wall was completed within 4 months at Monte Casino in Four-Ways near Johannesburg South Africa in 2001, making it 23 years old now!

It boasts a face area of 2700 m² and average height of 9m. In this case Terraforce L13 blocks were placed on a 25Mpa concrete foundation and built to full height in chainages of about 60m.

The bottom twelve rows of blocks were filled with a cement stabilised load bearing mix, while the fabric reinforced backfill was made up of 5% cement stabilised soil (mixed with a T.L.B. and placed with a Telescopic Loader) and compacted to 93% mod AASHTO.

Light and heavy grades of woven geofabric were specified depending on their position within the wall. Insitu concrete shear keys were installed every row and every other block, including rows with fabric layers. All geotextiles were pre-tensioned in warp direction before placement of backfill material took place.

Gorgeous green walls at Diemersfontein Wine and Country Estate

Terraforce® recommended contractor Dassenberg Retaining Systems installed these striking plant supportive Terraforce® round face finish retaining walls at Diemersfontein Wine and Country Estate near Wellington in the Western Cape, South Africa.

Designs for the walls were prepared by Terrasafe (Icos Engineers) and Dassenberg Retaining System installed 12 000 Terraforce L12 retaining blocks, a number of Terracrete™ Hard Lawn pavers for steep driveways and 4×4™ Step blocks for stairways.

To soften the walls and to allow them to meld into the surrounding environment, the walls were planted once complete. Says Etienne de Villiers, Project Manager: “The plants specified at the estate and for the retaining walls were mostly indigenous, water-wise plants, such as Crassula Spathulata, Delospermum Lydenburgenes, Crassula Marginalis, Jordaaniella Dubia, Carpobrotus Edulis and Othonna Capensis. Two other species are from the New Zealand (Dysphyma Crassifolium) and the United States (Lippia Nodiflora)”.

As a result, after initial watering to encourage the plants to establish roots, the retaining walls transformed into lush green vertical gardens, cost-effective, low maintenance and environmentally friendly!

The Terraforce® system is akin to a living wall, the unique hollow-core design of the interlocking blocks allowing plants to become a part of the wall. By using water wise plants and a good irrigation system, a sustainable, yet durable green wall can be created.

This psarticular wall design is a unique variation, and was conceptualised by Bryan Newby, a Namibian based specialist Terraforce installer, Simon Knutton, a Johannesburg based consulting engineer with extensive experience in designing Terraforce walls, and the input from the Terraforce head office in Cape Town.

Construction of the walls started with the placement of 1800 x 1000 x 300 precast foundations, 600mm below the finished ground level, onto which Terraforce L16 blocks where installed - double skin and concrete filled - to the finished ground level.

Subsequently the blocks were placed double skin, soil filled and in the rock face finish at an inclination of 80 degrees.

As the wall progressed, the innovative facade of this Terrforce wall design came into play, by reversing and moving forward slightly every third row of blocks, to provide a plant supportive pocket that could also accommodate an efficient, easy maintenance dripper irrigation system.

Planted hollow core interlocking retaining walls offer several environmental benefits:

Erosion Control: Retaining walls help prevent soil erosion by stabilizing slopes and holding back soil. This is crucial for maintaining the integrity of landscapes and preventing sediment runoff into water bodies, which can harm aquatic ecosystems.

Biodiversity Support: The hollow cores of these walls can serve as habitats for small animals, insects, and plants. By providing shelter and nesting spaces, these walls contribute to local biodiversity and support ecosystems in urban areas where green spaces might be limited.

Air Quality Improvement: The vegetation planted in the hollow cores of these walls helps improve air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen through photosynthesis. This can mitigate the urban heat island effect and enhance the overall quality of the surrounding environment.

Aesthetic Enhancement: Green walls soften the appearance of concrete structures, making them visually appealing and integrating them more seamlessly into the natural landscape. This can improve the overall aesthetic quality of urban environments and promote a sense of well-being among residents.

Stormwater Management: Plants in the retaining wall can absorb and filter rainwater, reducing stormwater runoff and the risk of flooding. This helps to replenish groundwater reserves and maintain the natural hydrological cycle.

Sustainable Materials: Many modern retaining wall systems use sustainable materials such as recycled aggregates or locally sourced materials, reducing the environmental impact associated with their production and transportation.

Longevity and Durability: Properly designed and constructed planted hollow core interlocking retaining walls can have a long lifespan, reducing the need for frequent replacements and associated environmental costs.

Preventing soil erosion in rural developments

Terraforce® retaining walls play a vital role in erosion control within rural housing developments, serving as robust barriers against soil displacement and water runoff. These walls are meticulously engineered to withstand the pressures of shifting terrain, effectively stabilizing slopes and preventing soil erosion.

In rural settings where housing developments often contend with uneven landscapes and varying soil types, Terraforce walls provide a dependable solution to maintain structural integrity and safeguard against erosion-induced hazards.

WHAT IS TERRAFORCE®?

TERRAFORCE is an award winning “one block does it all” interlocking concrete block earth retaining wall system.

The blocks are tailored to create environmentally friendly residential or industrial retaining walls, supporting sustainable development in soil stabilisation.

Terraforce walls can range from light gravity retaining walls to geogrid reinforced earth-retaining or heavy gravity, double skin retaining walls. They are suitable for any commercial and residential applications, small or large!

The system combines more advantages than other systems:

* The blocks are relatively light weight for easy transport and handling,

* They interlock horizontally as well as vertically - via course infill – for superior stability,

* The blocks are reversible to display a round face, flat face, or rock face appearance,

* Are fully plant supportive with an open horizontal surface structure,

* A closed vertical surface structure prevents progressive erosion of
compacted backfill,

* The blocks can be used as part of either a gravity system, as the fascia for a geosynthetic reinforced segmental retaining wall structure or as a fascia for a cement stabilized backfill.

* The unique block shape allows wall inclination and curvature to be adapted freely to suit site conditions.

TERRAFORCE blocks are used worldwide for many purposes:

Land reclamation | seashore protection | river and stream rehabilitation | Garden landscaping | slope stabilization | noise and blast barriers | and much more!

Keeping it green with Terraforce®

These striking Terraforce round face walls are now 19 years old and still looks amazing!

In 2005, a new shopping complex, Stellenbosch Square, on the R44 between thriving Stellenbosch and Somerset West in the Western Cape, required some innovative earth retaining solutions, both cost effective and compatible with aesthetic/environmental demands, within the constraints dictated by site and viability considerations. The cut and fill scenario on the site required two major walls. At the back or delivery side of the building a 6,7m high by 215m long wall at a steep 75° angle was required to provide sufficient space for delivery vehicles to operate effectively.

The available space of approximately 2m between the boundary and the kerb-line demanded a gravity wall partially strengthened with reinforced concrete infill. The Terraforce retaining walls were installed by Dassenberg Retaining Systems on an 800 x 350mm concrete foundation with a Y12 rebar encased in 20mpa concrete, extending to a height of 2.5m, in every 2nd Terraforce L11 block.

Behind the bottom blocks a sub-surface drainage system was installed in combination with cement-stabilized sand backfill. Above that level, a coarse sand drainage layer was specified with a clay cut-off plug and an open drainage channel. A similar wall was installed for the front or parking side of the centre. This wall is 120m long and 3,8m high, which allowed the foundation size to be reduced to 500 x 350mm.

A total of 13 000 L11 smooth face blocks were delivered to the site. Infill above the reinforced level was specified to be 80% topsoil mixed with 20% 19mm crushed rock for added friction between the rows of blocks. Dassenberg Retaining Systems finished this R1,2 million contract within 3 months, experiencing minimal delays due to waiting for services being installed ahead of them.

Today, the walls are still looking good, thanks to good plant cover and regular maintenance, and the fact that Terraforce blocks are specifically designed for providing good plant cover, which adds to overall wall strength and environmental value.
