A 26 year old man from Ha-Rasenkisi has been remanded in custody for allegedly ra**ng own mother, 51, and causing her grievous bodily harm with a knife.
He appeared before the Maseru Magistrate charged with r**e and attempted murder.
The police say the attack happened on Thursday last week in the morning, while the victim was alone in her bedroom while her husband was at a hospital to remove stitches of injuries he sustained from stabbing by the same son.
Police say the man entered his parents' bedroom and asked his mother whether his father had already left for work.
She told him that his father had gone to hospital to remove stitches.
The suspect then left the room briefly before coming back moments later.
He threw himself onto the bed where his mother was lying and, when she asked what he was doing, he strangled her until she was unconscious.
He then proceeded to r**e her, and stabbed her in her ge***al area with a knife.
The police further report that the victim regained consciousness and saw the suspect standing beside the bed holding a bloody knife.
The attack was allegedly interrupted by someone who arrived at the house and knocked on the door.
The suspect chased the visitor away, but the person heard cries for help coming from inside the house and alerted villagers.
The villagers rushed to the home, rescued the woman and apprehended the suspect before calling the police.
The police took him to the hospital for treatment of injuries he sustained from the angry mob.
The police would not say whether he was beaten or how he got the injuries.
He remains in custody and is expected to appear in court again on August 11.
